The American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) has an immediate need for a senior level mechanical engineer or naval architect with experience in subsea umbilical risers and flowlines (SURF). This position works within our Corporate Offshore Technology Department and leads ABS R&D efforts within the discipline. This position is located in Houston, TX.

Position Description
This position leads SURF research and development efforts in support of offshore related classification and rule development. The products, projects, and initiatives delivered by this group and discipline are utilized extensively within the offshore industry and internally by review engineers and field surveyors. The lead in this group will be expected to maintain industry relationships through participation in technical seminars, meetings, and organizations. In addition to the technical work in, this position is expected to coach and mentor engineers within the SURF work group as well as outside the work group as appropriate. The expectation is this position and the associated SURF team are the ABS industry subject matter experts in subsea umbilical risers and flowlines (SURF) related areas.

Position Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Ocean Engineering, or Naval Architecture from an accredited university or college is required. Postgraduate degree is preferred. Undergraduate and /or Postgraduate degrees in other educational disciplines will be considered based on experience. Minimum of 8 years experience in subsea umbilical riser and flowline (SURF) design and or integrity management. Specific experience in Flexible Risers, Top Tensioned Risers and SCR's is required. Should have experience conducting or leading riser analysis to include clearance analysis, dynamic analysis, fatigue analysis (VIV and VIM) and ECA analysis. Must have experience in the practical application of riser design codes.

Candidates must communicate effectively in English, in both oral and written formats. This position works with extensively with internal and external clients, governmental organizations, and academic entities in support of ABS Rules and Guide development. Individuals may be required to travel domestically and internationally to participate and/or present technical papers, training, or assistance to same. Must possess the ability to lead a team, work well in a collaborative manner, meet schedule deadlines, and coordinate multiple efforts projects in an environment where priorities and assignments may change regularly.
