Senior Optical Engineer Position Overview:
L-3 Communications, Wescam Sonoma has an immediate Senior Optical Engineer opportunity focusing on design, development, integration, and test of stabilized airborne visible and infrared imaging systems.
The Senior Optical Engineer reports to the Manager of Optical Engineering with approximately 5 people in this group. The Optical group reports into Engineering with approximately 80 employees and is run by the Director of Engineering.
Review and understand all processes, procedures & tools relating to this function. Be capable of performing independent optical system design and analysis within 2 months.
OPTICAL DESIGN, DEVELOPMENT, INTEGRATION, AND TEST
The primary objectives of this position are 1) design optical imaging and laser-based turret payloads, 2) provide optical analyses in support of current customer and IRAD programs, 3) provide optical and system analyses to support Bid and Proposal activities.
Secondary objectives of this position are 1) to support development of optical integration and metrology procedures, capabilities, and equipment, 2) support hands-on integration and test of visible and infrared imaging modules as well as helping to maintain the Optics Lab, 3) interface with optical component vendors and provide support to manufacturing and supply chain.
Basic Qualifications & Education:
MS with minimum of 10 yrs exp or Ph.D. in Optics w/ a firm understanding of geometrical optical principles, imaging systems, radiometry, optical integration, & optical metrology req.
Must be familiar with industry standard optical design programs (Zemax, Code V, OSLO, etc.) & advanced technical analysis software (Mathematica, MATLAB, etc.) Must understand optical metrology & alignment techniques & equipment for diffraction-limited lenses.
Infrared lens system, blackbody radiometry and thermal measurements, and MTF test equipment knowledge, experience, & interest are well matched for this role.
Candidates must be US Citizens and meet eligibility requirements to access classified information.

Ability to use standard office equipment in a manufacturing and engineering environment.
