The Sr. Research Associate will be part of a research project investigating the technical and economic performance
of various biofuels production processes from biomass, with a focus on technologies that will enable next generation
biofuels beyond cellulosic ethanol. The research will be focused on the development of technoeconomic models of
various operational modalities that could exist in a cellulosic biorefinery based on current technologies and those
enabled by the advances at the Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI) and the research community at large. This Sr.
Research Associate will be a key member of the team developing these models at JBEI.
Develop technoeconomic models of cellulosic biorefineries using specialized chemical engineering software,
specifically ASPEN Plus and/or SuperPro.
In collaboration with other JBEI members, develop customized unit operations based on JBEI technologies
to understand impact on cost and performance as compared to the current state-of-the-art.
Conduct various “scenario maps” of different configurations that could exist within a biorefinery focused on
multiple inputs and multiple outputs.
Cary out material and energy balances for multiple biorefinery configurations.
Collect and analyze data and prepare results for publication in scientific journals and presentations at
Maintain an accurate and detailed scientific logbook of all experiments performed. Ensure that others could
Participate in group meetings and seminars.
Maintain an accurate and detailed data recording of findings and report preparation for review with supervising
scientists. Ensure that others can duplicate results.
Strong attention to working independently to complete and troubleshoot required experiments for the supervising
Develop optimization algorithms
Develop consolidated bioprocessing options for next-generation biorefineries
KEY SUCCESS FACTORS:
BS or MS degree in the biochemical engineering, chemical engineering, or the chemical and biological sciences
with demonstrated success in applying laboratory techniques.
Ability to carry out systems level analysis of complex biochemical process streams
Experience using software such as ASPEN Plus and/or SuperPro and familiarity with MS Office, and MS
Excel in particular
Must adhere to all campus and EH&S safety policies.
Familiarity with process design and technoeconomic analysis
Ability to conduct independent experiments, maintain excellent records and manage complex data sets
Outstanding verbal and written communication skills
Ability to work in a team environment and effectively interacts with a broad range of colleagues.

This is a 1-year, term appointment with the possibility of renewal and with the possibility of conversion to career based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs.
