This Senior Underwriter position will be accountable for all aspects of Hull/Marine Liability (HML) underwriting within their assigned broker/agent plant and geographic territories. The successful candidate will contribute to the efforts of the product line to grow, maintain and service a profitable book of HML business.

The underwriter will be based in New York City and report directly to the Hull/Marine Liability Product Line Leader.


-Accountable for contributing to the achievement of the HML business plan for US Fire, including goals for new business, renewal retention, pricing and profitability. Uses independent judgment and initiative to support business goals

-Gathers, reviews and analyzes all necessary underwriting information to conduct proper risk selection, exposure analysis and premium determination for risks within the defined HML segment appetite. Prices business and offers terms within company guidelines.

-Assists in the identification and development of new HML producers and target accounts. Maintains and improves existing relationships with producers and target accounts within the region.

-Services existing accounts and while producing new business within the HML product line appetite. Maintains a high level of customer service at all times.


-At least five years experience underwriting Ocean Marine business, preferably Hull/Marine Liability products

-Strong communication, analytical and negotiation skills

-Hull, P&I and Primary Marine Liability knowledge a must

-Marine General Liability, Excess and Bumbershoot underwriting skills a plus

-Existing relationships with HML agents and producers a plus

-Strong customer service and relationship-building skills.

-Must be able to work well in a small, tightly-knit team environment, but also able to work independently within an assigned underwriting authority document, territory and appetite

-Proficient in the use of Microsoft software applications

-Bachelor's degree or equivalent, AMIM or CPCU preferred
