The Virginia Indigent Defense Commission (VIDC) is accepting applications for the position of Part-Time Sentencing Advocate I located in the Winchester Public Defender Office. The Sentencing Advocate reports to the Public Defender of the Winchester Office and is employed at will. The successful candidate will be subject to fingerprint based criminal background checks.

Duties
As a member of the Winchester Public Defender Office, the Sentencing Advocate I will provide support services to include but not limited to investigations and interviews into client's family, social and medical histories and mental health issues that may be factors in mitigation. Additionally, this position provides outreach and establishes a rapport with clients and clients' families and support systems.

Minimum Qualifications
A Bachelor's degree in social work, psychology, criminal justice or a related degree in mental health is needed along with working experience in a mental health discipline dealing with families and support systems. Additional qualifications include working experience conducting thorough and extensive in person interviews with clients and clients' family and friends to obtain family and social history reports and experience examining medical histories and identifying mental health factors that will assist in mitigation. The qualified candidate will have the ability to work independently and dependently in a team driven environment, establish a rapport and maintain professional relationships with client's family members and other critical individuals and agencies that provide services, and communicate effectively both orally and in writing. A valid driver's license with the means to travel is also required.

Preferred Qualifications
Prior experience working in a criminal justice environment and fluency in Spanish is preferred.
