The University Of Massachusetts Medical School is actively recruiting for faculty physicians to serve in the UMass Correctional Health (UMCH) program. UMCH has a long-term contract to deliver health care services to inmates in the Massachusetts Department of Correction (DOC) prisons. The overarching system includes more than eleven thousand inmates at eighteen sites in central and southern Massachusetts. We are committed to providing high quality care with an eye toward outcomes evaluation, continuous quality improvement and development of a correctional health academic center of excellence.
The Site Medical Director / Physician will provide direct patient care and administrative oversight at the Correctional Facility Clinical Programs for Old Colony Correctional Center and Massachusetts Alcohol and Substance Abuse Center. This oversight will include direct supervision of the nurse practitioners and physician assistants, assisting with the development of quality improvement projects, clinician staffing at the sites and further development of clinical program.
In this role you will have direct supervision of Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants and other medical clinicians at assigned sites to ensure the provision of effective and efficient high-quality patient care
- Provide clinical management of all infirmary patients, if applicable, at the site you have been assigned to, including coordination of care, management decisions and will be required to coordinate daily visits on all infirmary patients in accordance with established standards as required by DOC, NCCHC and ACA.
- Be directly responsible for the medical care of DOC inmates; Provide each of your patients with a comprehensive assessment, appropriate development of differential diagnoses and application of diagnostic testing, appropriate problem list, treatment plan, and such monitoring, further evaluation, consultation and collaboration as necessary to address safety and appropriate care
- Ensure adequate access for sick visits, chronic disease management and annual health maintenance visits, in accordance with the DOC contract, NCCHC and ACA; and according to UMMS policies and procedures.
- Monitor medical management of patients, including specialty and hospital utilization, pharmacotherapy, supervision of the mid-level practitioners and access to specialty services
- Participate in a pro-rated share of on-call system, at a typical frequency of three shifts per month. While on-call, you will be required to provide telephone back up to all of the sites. At least one of these each month will be a twenty-four weekend/holiday shift
- Be responsible for performing weekend rounds at one of the infirmaries at least one weekend each month (including both Saturday and Sunday) and an equal share of infirmary coverage during recognized DOC holidays
- Demonstrate an understanding of UMCH’s mission in performing all aspects of the position
- Handle confidential information as defined in UMCH’s and DOC’s policies.
- May provide backup leadership to other sites as assigned.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Responsible for the integrity of your portion of the medical records for each of your patients, ensuring that minimum documentation standards are met and that the medical record supports and documents the care of the patient
Performance Improvement Functions:
- Collaborate with your patients’ mental health clinicians and with community providers, and provide documentation, including timely discharge summaries, to ensure continuity of care
- Provide an environment in which the medical providers follow and abide by the ethics of the medical profession, all applicable federal, state and local laws and ordinances, and any and all other policies adopted by UMMS and DOC.
- Ensure providers on site maintain current credentials as needed and provide updates to Clinical Administration and UMMS credentialing to ensure compliance with client commitments.
- Oversee and maintain performance improvement processes as established by the correctional health center of excellence, the federal government, and any other entities
- Review results of patient satisfaction surveys
- Review patient complaints

- M.D. or D.O. from an Accredited Medical School
- MA Medical LicenseDEA Certificate (State & Federal)
- BLS CPR
- Demonstrated ability to manage the delivery of care in a complex healthcare environment.
- Correctional health care experience.
- M.P.H. degree or fellowship training in primary care desired.
- Board Certification in Internal Medicine, Family Medicine), Emergency Medicine or Surgery.
- Prior urgent care, general adult medical care with a focus on mental/behavior health.
- Previous experience working with underserved populations and/or community-based programs
- Clinical teaching experience and private practice experience
- Demonstrated history of a caring and helpful attitude when interacting with patients, vendors and fellow employees. Commitment to build cooperative partnerships with internal and external customers
- Ability to participate in other program activities as appropriate
