Vertica, an HP company, seeks Software Engineers in Cambridge, MA to design and develop in-database analytic algorithms within a commercially successful, high performance, massively parallel distributed database.

This is your opportunity to develop state-of-the-art analytic techniques for processing terabytes of data in an extremely efficient manner. You will proactively identify, design, and implement custom analytic extensions to the core engine as driven by customer requirements.


Design, develop and implement state-of-the-art analytic techniques in our core database engine.

Design, develop, implement and support APIs for integration with external algorithm packages.

Support integration efforts by third-party partners.

Develop and document intellectual property.

Education and/or Training (choose one, we have multiple openings):

Master’s degree, or equivalent, in Math, Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.

Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent, in Math, Computer Science, Engineering, or related field plus several years of progressive experience in a similar position

Knowledge and Experience (required):
Ability to deliver prodigious amounts of extremely high quality code (“get stuff done”)

Numerical methods

Data structures

Complexity analysis and improvement of algorithms

C/C++, high performance, multi-threading

Knowledge and Experience (a subset of):
“Big Data” analysis techniques such as social graphing

Geospatial queries and optimization techniques (e.g. R-Trees)

Text analytics (e.g. inverted indices, sentiment analysis)

Statistical modeling or Data mining techniques (e.g. KNN, clustering)

Experience developing easy to use APIs in C/C++, Java and other languages

SQL, Database internals
