Sonographer - OU Medical & Children's

Under immediate to general supervision, performs technical procedures that require application of high frequency ultrasonic waves to patients in the diagnosis of a variety of diseases.
Essential Function/Duties:

Prepares patients for examinations and correlates clinical history with procedures ordered by physician to be performed. Performs basic ultrasound procedures in assigned specialty service area utilizing a variety of equipment and techniques in accordance with established clinical practice standards, guidelines and protocols. Interacts with physicians, staff, family and patient to develop and implement the plan of care. Performs the routine maintenance on the equipment and ensure the exam room is orderly and clean between patients. Ensures the proper labeling of ultrasound recordings. Communicates clinical findings and makes referrals regarding patient care needs to appropriate personnel. Performs non-clinical support tasks as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications: Graduation from an AMA approved program for Diagnostic Ultrasound Technology and six (6) months full-time equivalent employment as a Registered Sonographer in one or more of the primary specialty areas.

*Licensure: Meet American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) registry requirements and published standards as a fully credentialed sonographer in one or more of the specialty areas (Diagnostic, Cardiac, or Non-Invasive Vascular).

Physical Requirements (with or without accommodation):

Requires frequent bending, walking, squatting, moving and lifting of patients and equipment. Visual acuity is required to ensure work is done correctly. Manual dexterity is required to operate clinical and non-clinical devices and equipment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of human anatomy and physiology. Knowledge of ultrasound techniques and ultrasound equipment such as B-Scanner, Real Time, Doppler (pulsed wave and color flow), Echocardiographic 2-D and M-Mode multi-format camera, film processor and film duplicator. Skill in performing ultrasound examinations; in establishing and maintaining an effective working relationship with patients and other staff members; in effective communications both verbally and in writing .
