A Specimen Processor organizes requests, sets priorities, organizes workload, prepares equipment, collects and/or receives specimens from patients of all ages.
High school diploma or equivalent.
Phlebotomy, computer and office experience, or other health related experience.

Department Position Summary:
The Specimen Processor participates in the instruction of new Specimen Processors and performs difficult collections. He/she performs the quick registration process in the HIS for outpatient lab specimens, and properly labels and processes these specimens. He/she loads analyzers with primary tubes as approved by the State of Tennessee Laboratory Licensing Board. He/she prepares samples, enters proper test information into Reference Lab computer and sends specimens to Reference Lab for testing. The Specimen Processor monitors the reference-sending log and resolves outstanding test orders.
The employee must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served in his/her section. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age specific needs and to provide the care needed as described in the unit's policies and procedures.
