AFS-USA is particularly proud of its staff of approximately 200 people nationwide, located in three Regional Service Centers and the National Service Center in New York City. The three Regional Service Centers are located in: Portland, Oregon St. Paul, Minnesota, Baltimore, Maryland

Regional Service Center staff work in partnership with our volunteers to provide quality programs and support to participants and host families, ensuring that regional goals are met, and expanding AFS's outreach and services. Regional Service Center positions usually require individuals to have experience in coordinating community volunteers and promoting educational experiences, strong communication and cross-cultural skills.

AFS-USA works with the Department of State and foundation sponsors to implement several programs, including the Future Leaders Exchange (FLEX) program, which brings high school students from 12 countries from the former Soviet Union; the Congress-Bundestag (CB) Program, a US-German initiative; and the Youth Exchange and Study Program (YES), a public diplomacy initiative authorized by Congress in the aftermath of September 11, which builds bridges of international understanding between Americans and people in approximately 40 countries with significant Muslim populations; and the National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) a language intensive program designed to build a core of US citizens knowledgeable in the language and cultural of native speakers of Arabic, Hindi, Persian, Korean, Mandarin, Turkish and Russian.

Overview of Responsibilities The role of the Regional Sponsored Programs Hosting Coordinator is to support the AFS mission and organizational goal of providing international exchange experiences through the AFS-USA Sponsored Programs. The Regional Sponsored Programs Hosting Coordinator is a member of the Regional Hosting Team and reports directly to the Regional Hosting Manager.

Participants hosted on the FLEX, CB, or YES grants are required to be hosted in ¡§clusters¡¨ of three or more students. The Coordinators main responsibility is to collaborate with local volunteers and regional hosting staff in the development and implementation of strategies that build and expand the strength and continuity of Sponsored Programs Clusters within volunteer hosting Teams. In working to achieve this goal the Coordinator will ensure Teams have a sufficient base of trained local volunteers, and sufficient recruitment activity to meet the Regions annual qualitative and quantitative Sponsored Programs hosting goals. This individual will also work with local volunteers and hosting staff to identify potential areas for new cluster development and work to establish new volunteer teams in those areas in order to expand the footprint of AFS-USA.

The Regional Sponsored Programs Coordinator will also serve as a resource for regional hosting staff and volunteers about Sponsored Programs and provide the assistance they need to create and maintain strong sustainable clusters capable of implementing AFS-USA Sponsored Programs with quality. Specific responsibilities for this position include:

Pre Recruitment 1. Work closely with Hosting Staff and local volunteers, on an annual basis, to ensure sufficient individual cluster hosting goals for all FLEX, CB, and YES participants are established.

2. In coordination with the Regional Hosting Staff, and local Volunteer Teams, develop and implement plans for volunteer recruitment, training, and retention to ensure that host family recruitment goals in existing clusters are met.

3. Work closely with Hosting Staff and local volunteers to ensure that local volunteers are identified in each cluster, to take responsibility for host family finding for all Sponsored Programs participants.

Recruitment 1. In conjunction with Regional hosting staff ensure all Sponsored Programs students within the assigned Region are placed in a quality permanent family with a school placement in a volunteer supported area.

2. Support Regional Hosting staff and local Hosting Volunteers in lead generation activities.

3. Monitor Sponsored Programs goal, benchmarks and placement progress and communicate achievement or shortfalls of goals as needed.

4. Implement specific lead generating activities within targeted areas for Sponsored Programs students as needed, if a recruitment shortfall occurs.

Development 1. Coordinate with Hosting Staff, and local volunteers, on a regular basis, to identify areas for new Sponsored Programs cluster development.

2. Develop and implement plans to build new clusters in undeveloped or underdeveloped areas where potential for growth exists that has been identified.

Quality Assurance 1. Work closely with Hosting, Support and Compliance Staff to ensure training for Cluster Coordinators and other hosting volunteers in the new clusters, on the grant requirements of SP students, Global Link processes, U.S. State Department and CSIET regulations, and other topics as needed.

2. Provide individual support and coaching to Cluster Coordinators who are struggling with their Clusters.

3. With Sponsored Programs staff, participate in and lead monthly conference calls for all Cluster Coordinators.

4. Act as a program and cultural resource for Cluster Coordinators and Regional Hosting staff to support them in their roles.

5. Conduct in-home on-site visits to select Sponsored Programs families to meet Department of State Guidelines.

6. Ensure that monitoring guidelines are being met as outlined per grant guidelines as the Department of State guidelines and hosting environment continue to change.

7. Other duties as assigned.

Skills and Qualifications:

Excellent written and oral communications skills

Ability to maintain good rapport and cooperative cross-functional relationships with staff and volunteers, as well as the ability to approach conflict in a positive manner

Strong relationship skills, customer service oriented

Data entry and knowledge of maintaining databases

Aility to maintain confidentiality of information and to only discuss information among appropriate personnel in appropriate places

Skilled in creating statistical reports and data analysis

Poficiency in MS Word and Excel required, other computer application skills desired

Ability to manage conflict and resolve complaints in a quick, professional manner

Strong organizational skills, self-motivated, and the ability to be managed from a distance

Previous experience in a teaching or training role preferred.

Bachelors Degree or equivalent work experience in a related field, such as volunteer management

Experience working with volunteers is essential

Work Conditions Work hours are generally from 9:00 am - 500 pm, Monday through Friday. Some evening and weekend work will be required. In addition, domestic travel will be required for up to 30% of the time.
