Job Summary: The Sr. Compliance Specialist - Privacy ensures that the Company’s privacy-related policies and procedures comply with all applicable local, state, and federal laws and regulations. This position has direct responsibility for overseeing the Company’s responses to requests, subpoenas and inquiries from government entities related to patient records.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Manages record release process including patient requests, subpoenas and government inquires;
o Maintains database of all instances to ensure auditing and accountability
o Performs legal analysis to ensure company compliance with HIPAA
o Provides direction and guidance to employees

  • Ensures that information disclosures containing potentially-protected health information comply with all applicable local, state, and federal laws and regulations;
  • Responsible to provide subject matter expert responses to employees regarding HIPAA obligations;
  • Responsible for follow-up responses to requests for Business Associate Agreements from customers;
  • Develops, implements, and maintains privacy-related policies and procedures that comply with all applicable local, state, and federal laws and regulations as needed;
  • Assists in the development of end user education materials for monthly and annual requirements;
  • Responsible for investigating and resolving privacy-related incidents and understanding various levels of severity. Recognizes situations requiring escalation to Chief Privacy Officer;

  • Responsible for providing employees with timely, candid and constructive feedback; developing employees to their full potential and providing challenging opportunities that enhance employee career growth; developing the appropriate talent pool to ensure adequate bench strength and succession planning; recognizing and rewarding employees for accomplishments.
  • Responsible for ensuring that subordinate employees provide accurate, timely responses to inquiries for which employees have primary responsibility.
Minimum (Required) Qualifications: (must be met in order to perform the job at the required level)

  • Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university; or five plus years related experience or training in privacy or security-related function in health care industry; or equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Certified Paralegal or JD;
  • Excellent computer skills required, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook;
  • Must be highly organized and detail-oriented;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills required;
  • Requires the ability to exercise independent judgment and employ advanced reasoning skills;
  • Demonstrate high level of integrity and professionalism to handle sensitive and confidential information.
Preferred Qualifications: (if above and beyond the minimum required)

  • CIPP or similar certification
Physical Demands: May sit, stand, stoop, bend and walk intermittently during the day. May sit or stand seven (7) to ten (10) hours per day. May be necessary to work extended hours as needed. Finger dexterity to operate office equipment required. May need to lift up to twenty-five (25) pounds on occasion. Visual acuity to see and read fine prints. Specific vision abilities required by this role include close vision, color vision and the ability to adjust focus. Must be able to hear normal voice sounds. The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this role.
