The focus of Fuels and Upstream Business Development is to develop fuels markets for our oils and execute on our strategy of deploying commercial-scale production and tranisition the business unit to profitability. More specifically, much of our focus is on entering commerical partnerships to facilitate (i) market access; (ii) building and operating large scale commercial manufacturing plant(s) to meet commercial production targets; and (iii) securing sufficient quantities of feedstock to supply commercial manufacturing; wrapping these elements into fully formed investment packages for review and decision by Solazyme's EMT and Board of Directors.

Work with business team leadership to communicate to various stakeholders our progress against commercial development path and timelines; as well as the integrated strategic, scientific and financial rational for core business development transactions

Perform high-level modeling, complex financial analyses and valuations with recommended strategic alternatives (including project finance, partnerships, licensing, JVs etc.) ;

Analyze information/data on industry/market trends, commodity pricing, industry partnership and competitive activities to stress test capital investment strategies and to target additional opportunities of interest for the business

Engage in partner development activities, including: identifying and establishing contact relationships with potential partners, completing company profiles, and scheduling and conducting potential partner visits

Support active negotiations including development of presentation materials and financial models, as well as external and internal information gathering and synthesis

Manage external consultants hired as necessary to support the business development team

Analyze/evaluate international aspects/considerations of corporate and business unit growth initiatives

Research and benchmark other companies, i.e., competitors, partners, and other key value chain participants

Present strategic recommendations to executive management team based on analytics, research, statistics and data reports

5 – 7 years experience; attractive candidates will have experience in management consulting, investment banking, and/or direct industry operational experience (i.e., oleochemicals, nutritionals, personal care, agribusiness.)

MBA highly desired, but negotiable if equivalent professional experience in financial modeling and investment analysis demonstrated;

Technical degree (e.g., chemical/biochemical engineering) attractive, but not required; evidence of demonstrated capacity to acquire or otherwise understand and assimilate scientific/technical knowledge quickly and proficiently

Strong values and high degree of personal integrity

Intellectually curious: a clear interest in a broad range of business, strategy and finance topics; finds problem solving exhilarating

Have a strong commitment to excellence and personal and professional growth

Excellent grasp of business and financial fundamentals: profit & loss, discounted cash flows, scenario analysis, investment metrics

Outstanding financial modeling skills

Ability to work under tight timelines: ability to prioritize tasks, work efficiently and maintain discipline in order to meet challenging deadlines

Strong attention to detail and ability to apply common sense to derive reasonable solution sets.

An independent thinker who can draw insights and conclusions

Working knowledge of the process industries, and process economics.

Ability to apply effective tools and techniques to bring clarity to complex issues

Outstanding inter-personal / communication skills and excellent presentation skills, with a demonstrated ability to communicate and negotiate

Team player: ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment

Very comfortable working in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint

Self-motivated and proactive: resourceful, responsible, patient, tenacious, informed, independent, confident, and full of energy

Portuguese or Spanish language skills a plus

Willingness/ability to travel ~25% of the year
