Staff accountants are integral members of our professional team. The work they perform is at the core of what we do for our clients. Staff accountants are exposed to auditing, accounting and tax work providing support to a variety of client engagements and have many opportunities to put the business and accounting theory and knowledge learned in school into practice across multiple industries. For example, you will develop:

Industry knowledge and expertise and share that knowledge with the team
An area of specialty and become a technical resource in that area
An ability to motivate and train both self and staff

Typical assignments will include:
Accounting / Audit Assurance

Preparation of financial statements, footnotes, work papers, tax returns, management letters, agreed-upon procedures, and other attestation engagements
Analyze client transactions and unusual situations and incorporate the appropriate tax and accounting effect to the transaction or situation
Recognize and resolve potential and/or existing problems with appropriate research and consulting if necessary

Tax Compliance

Complete tax returns and ensure accuracy and completeness
Perform research on tax issues and filing requirements that affect tax compliance

Engagement / Client Management

Serve as a member of the engagement team on specific client accounts, working with the lead on pre-engagement planning execution, final deliverable development and billing and collection

Daily Duties and Responsibilities

The work of staff accountants is guided by an in-charge accountant who provides a brief in advance on the assignment, suggests expeditious methods, answers questions, decides on remedies when difficulties are encountered, and periodically reviews the staff accountant's progress. The staff accountant ordinarily does not deal directly with client personnel without guidance and supervision by the in-charge accountant.

Record transactions in journals, classify postings, total and cross-total entries for a period.
Post journals to ledgers and balance.
Prepare simple financial statements using a provided format.
Reconcile bank accounts and resolve discrepancies.
Reconcile subsidiary accounts to controls.
Schedule computations of accrued expenses and give the basis for accruals.
Prepare schedules of write-offs of accounts receivable, prepaid expenses and deferred charges.
Schedule property and equipment and calculate depreciation and amortization.
Assist in the preparation and mailing of confirmation requests.
Schedule confirmations returned, list exceptions, and follow-up on their disposition.
Prepare payroll tax, sales and other local tax returns.
Prepare non-complex individual, partnership and corporate income tax returns.
Prepare statistical and account analyses, including listing of data, recasting data from one format into another, and calculating percentage relationships.
Perform, or assist in, counting and recording of cash, inventories of merchandise or supplies, and other assets.
Foot columns and test extensions to verify their accuracy.
Trace and vouch entries to original documents or sources.
Perform interim examinations (monthly or quarterly) of small companies where the work is of a repetitive nature and prepare substantiating workpapers in a provided format that is sufficiently detailed for a reviewer to evaluate.
Excerpt leases, minutes, and other documents and prepare a transmittal of journal entries to clients.
Post and extend adjustments to the working trial balance.
Import or export data on computer files such as: the trial balance/journal entry package; depreciation package; and other programs used on specific engagements.

Required Skills

BS/BA degree in accounting with ability to pursue CPA
Prior working experience in a public accounting firm strongly preferred
Prior Bookkeeping experience via an internship or previous work experience
Prior experience posting journals to ledgers and balancing ledgers
Experience posting journal entries
A solid understanding of debits and credits
Demonstrated writing skills
Strong research skills
Proven technical skills with MS Excel and Word
Solid organizational skills with a demonstrated ability to multi-task
Desire to work in a team environment
Ability to work quickly and independently in a busy and demanding environment
Detail orientation and strong organizational skills
Possess positive and professional attitude
Ability to work additional hours as needed; 240 hours of overtime are required for this position during tax season (Jan - April)
