DESCRIPTION

The Staff Accountant I is responsible for the monthly preparation of journal entries, reconciliation of various general ledger, income and expense accounts, adjusting as required, and vault duties, including daily deposit summaries and change bags. Additional responsibilities may include invoicing, data entry of accounts payable and special projects as assigned by the Accounting Manager. This position is also responsible for backup assistance for all areas within the Accounting department.

DUTIES

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Manages daily cash deposits and summaries with supervision of vault volunteer.
  • Manages fixed asset accounting and reconciliation.
  • Prepares, enters and posts month-end journal entries.
  • Documents and coordinates implementation of accounting control procedures.
  • Reconciles general ledger accounts, including identifying outstanding items, research and correcting concerns.
  • Compiles and analyzes financial information to prepare entries to accounts, such as general ledger accounts, fixed asset accounts and documenting business transactions.
  • Conducts studies and submits recommendations for improving the organization's accounting processes.
  • Monitors the preparation of W2's and state W2 tax filing.
  • Assists in other accounting functions as required.
  • Assists with the development and maintenance of the accounting procedures manual.
  • Assists with special projects as assigned.
  • Cross-training in Accounts Receivable and Payroll.
  • This position is exempt, paid salaried.
  • This position is regular full-time, scheduled for 40 hours/week.

  • Physical Demands: 65% Sitting 34% Standing 1% Lifting/Carrying/Pushing/Pulling 30 Pounds
  • Vision requirements include close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less), distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more), color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors), peripheral vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen up and down or to the left or right while eyes are fixed on a given point), depth and perception (three dimensional vision, ability to judge distance and spatial relationships), and ability to adjust focus (ability to adjust the eyes to bring an object into sharp focus).
  • Noise level varies from quiet (examples: library, private office) to moderate (examples: business office with computers and printers, light traffic).

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to effectively manage and track multiple projects simultaneously, prioritize, work well under pressure with a high degree of accuracy, and meet stringent and overlapping deadlines.
  • Demonstrated skills in teamwork and collaboration with colleagues, with varied skills and responsibilities meeting individual, departmental and organizational deadlines.
  • Demonstrated abilities in strategic planning.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Accounting principles and practices.
  • Understanding of confidentiality and protocol.
PREFERENCES:
  • Familiarity with nonprofit accounting.
  • Museum experience.
  • Experience in Financial Edge, or other database program.
  • Experience in Raiser's Edge, or Patron's Edge.
EDUCATION & WORK EXPERIENCE:
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent combination of experience and education.
  • Demonstrated coordination and project management skills.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Minimum 4 years of Accounting/Finance or related field.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with fund Accounting.
PREFERENCES:
  • Certified Public Accountant.
  • Bilingual - Spanish/English.
  • Experience working with volunteers.
