The Organization:

The International Fertilizer Development Center (IFDC) was established in 1974 as a center of excellence with expertise in fertilizers to service the needs of developing countries. With a legal designation granted by USA Presidential Executive Order as a nonprofit public international organization, IFDC provides a broad range of services in technical assistance, research, training and problem-solving related to agricultural sustainability.

IFDC is governed by an international board of directors with representation from developed and developing countries. The nonprofit Center is supported by various bilateral and multilateral aid agencies, private enterprises, foundations and national governments.

Headquartered in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, USA, with an office in Washington, D.C, IFDC workforce consists of around 800 staff members including more than 100 multinational staff in the USA and more than 700 international staff working in more than 30 countries worldwide.

The Role:

The Staff Training Manager is a newly created position, reporting directly to the Director of the Training and Workshop Coordination Unit (TWCU) within the Office of Operations. The general purpose of the position is to assess staff training needs, plan, design, develop, implement and evaluate staff professional training activities in line with IFDC strategic objectives.

This position requires a manager with proven experience in designing and implementing adult learning strategies with limited resources in order to build a superior workforce. The manager must work collaboratively with the TWCU Director in developing and managing staff training programs.

Main Job Responsibilities:
  • Identify and assess training needs of staff by conferring with supervisors or conducting surveys.
  • Ensure that each employee has developed an Individual Professional Development and Training Plan in line with IFDC strategic objectives and facilitate the execution of all staff training plans in collaboration with their supervisors
  • Plan, develop and organize training programs, using a combination of collective learning options (virtual or real classroom sessions, demonstrations, meetings, conferences and workshops…) and individual training methods (on-the-job trainings, self-study, e-learning, distance learning, apprenticeship and mentoring arrangements…) to accommodate staff availability and learning styles.
  • Establish comprehensive in-house management training programs meeting IFDC needs
  • Manage in house staff training schedules and sessions ensuring facility setup, logistics and employee notification
  • Produce training materials for in-house courses as appropriate.
  • Establish and maintain a database on staff development initiatives.
  • Develop a means of measuring the effectiveness and the return on investment of training programs through testing, evaluations, etc.

Required Skills Adult learning and Training : Proven knowledge of curriculum planning and adult training methodologies to create and implement effective and professional training programs.

Cultural Sensitivity : Ability to meet and interact with people from different countries in the process of creating and implementing staff training programs of the highest quality.

Innovation and creativity Ability to creatively adapt adult learning methods within the confines of a non-profit. As such, the candidate should demonstrate familiarity and comfort with Learning Management Systems (LMS) and online platforms that provide virtual class-room facilities such as GoToMeeting, Webinars and Jigsaw.

Interpersonal Effectiveness : Ability to work independently, as well as part of the existing team, display integrity in everything he/she does, and the presence and poise to coach and influence throughout the Organization.

Required Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Adult Education, Organizational Behavior or a related field
  • At least 7 years of prior experience applying adult learning theory in a public or private organization
  • On job experience in staff training plus relevant education field is acceptable
  • Relevant experience in an international organization would be desirable.
  • The ability to speak and translate French would be highly desirable
