Position Summary
The Sterile Processing Technician (OR) processes instruments, supplies, linens and equipment for patient care use.

Position Duties

1.
Decontaminates instruments and equipment
  • Decontaminates instruments and equipment according to manufacturer's instructions for use
  • Wears appropriate protective apparel during decontamination processes. Uses personal protective equipment (PPE) and techniques at all times as necessary and required
  • Ensures that items are decontaminated promptly upon arrival to the decontamination area
  • Makes sure decontamination area is clean and organized
  • Washes, organizes and sterilizes instruments following established procedures

2.
Assembles and packages instrument trays, linen packs and supply items
  • Demonstrates correct assembling of instrument trays, according to count sheet and AAMI standards
  • Communicates with lead (implant) tech and/or SPD Supervisor regarding missing instruments or need for changes to the count sheet
  • Ensures trays and packs are complete by taking the initiative to locate missing items
  • Inspects linen prior to packaging; makes sure that linen is not defective in any way including being dirty or having any lint or holes on/in it

3.
Operates sterilizers and monitors sterilization parameters
  • Operates ALL sterilizers in the department with 100% accuracy. Notifies Lead (Implant) Technician and/or SPD supervisor of any concerns
  • Monitors sterilization gauges, charts, tapes and biological/chemical indicators to ensure that adequate sterilization parameters have been met
  • Ensures guidelines for testing all sterilization equipment and results are recorded accurately and completely
  • Accurately documents ALL sterilizer quality control records
  • Demonstrates appropriate product recall when necessary
  • Ensures that sterilizers and sterilizer carts are maintained, clean and in working order

4.
Professional practice and development
  • Displays teamwork and initiative to ensure that all departmental needs and responsibilities are completed in a timely manner
  • Uses time constructively to attend to departmental needs and non-routine tasks
  • Actively participates in departmental staff meetings and in-services
  • Communicates information to peers related to clinical practice issues
  • Fosters an environment of learning and teaching. Stays curious; asks questions and uses standards to find and give answers
  • Supports and participates in the continuous assessment and improvement of the quality of services provided
  • Understands and complies with infection control, safety and OSHA procedures and regulations
  • Practices proper safety techniques in accordance with hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Immediately reports any mechanical or electrical equipment malfunctions, employee/patient/visitor injuries or accidents, or other safety issues to the appropriate department
  • Answers phone clearly and professionally, identifying departmental and self

5.

Position Qualifications

Education Requirements

High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
Required

Experience Requirements

2 years Sterile Processing experience
Preferred

1 year Surgical Technologist experience
Preferred

Certification/License/Registry Requirements

Certified Registered Central Sterile Technician (CRCST)
Preferred
