WHY INTERN WITH US?

As a Student Intern in the Department of Public Works with our Development Services Division, you will learn and gain practical experience in the area of planning and construction of City infrastructure in conjunction with the private development process. This division also reviews other public agency and utility companies' plans and issues permits for the construction of utility infrastructure and encroachment in City streets. This division interacts heavily with the private development community as well as other City Departments such as Planning, Building, and Code Enforcement, Transportation, and Environmental Services.

POSITION DESCRIPTION AND DUTIES

We currently have three Student Intern opportunities within the Development Services Division:

Development Review:
This Student Intern position will work on a Development Review Team responsible for processing private development projects. Duties typically include:

¿Review and issuance of sewer lateral, joint trench, and minor encroachment permits related to private development projects.
¿Work with project team to conduct new project research, file set-up and prepare simple Planning memorandum and responses.
¿Conduct basic civil plan reviews.
¿Assist in plan distribution and interact with other City departments such as Transportation, Planning, and Building.
¿Track project review progress using City¿s AMANDA permitting system.
¿Coordinate with project applicants, Engineers and Consultants to facilitate the development review process.

Special District Program:
This Student Intern position will work on the Special Districts Team which manages the Cities Special District Program. Duties typically include:

¿Creation of annual assessment rolls for maintenance and construction districts.
¿Modification or creation of district boundary maps using CAD software.
¿Development of proposed services and cost estimates.
¿Determining the impact of new development on existing districts.

Utility Program:
This Student Intern position will work on the Utility Team responsible for processing utility permits for utility companies. Duties typically include:

¿Process minor permits, close out encroachment permits, and issue message numbers to utility companies.
¿Input information in the database and conduct preliminary review of plans.
¿Organize and maintain project files and plans.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Any combination equivalent to completion of high school and current enrollment in an accredited college or university in undergraduate or graduate program.

Licenses and Certificates: Possession of a valid driver's license authorizing operation of a motor vehicle in the State of California

Selection Process
