This position is a Student Trainee (Museum Technician - General) in the Presidential Materials Division of the Legislative Archives, Presidential Libraries, and Museum Services at the National Archives and Records Administration in Washington, D.C.

Student Intern Program: This position is being filled under the new Pathways - Internship Program which provide opportunities for high school, vocational and technical, undergraduate, graduate, and professional students to be exposed to the work of the Federal government.

Student Definition: Students must be accepted for enrollment or enrolled and seeking a degree (diploma, certificate, etc,) in a qualifying educational institution, on a full or half-time basis (as defined by the institution in which you are enrolled) throughout the duration of the appointment, including awardees of the Harry S. Truman Foundation Scholarship Program under Public Law 93-842. You must be enrolled for the Fall 2013 session.

Position Duration/Expectation: Positions will be temporary not-to-exceed 1 year. May be extended in up to 1 year increments based on continued need/funds for the position and the student's continued compliance in the Intern Program. Completion of this Internship will not lead to permanent or term employment with NARA.

Typical work assignments include:
  • Assisting the museum specialist in the handling, transfer and packing of museum objects for long term storage and transportation..
  • Maintaining relevant computer and paper files for the physical control of the objects, using a collections management database (TMS) and other electronic methods.
.· Assisting professional supervisor in the compilation and tabulation of data necessary to research being conducted; under direct supervision may prepare descriptive material involving familiarity with museum and archival techniques.

  • Under the direction of the museum specialist, performing routine inspection and maintenance duties with respect to the physical condition of museum objects in accordance with up to date preservation techniques ensuring that attention is given to delicate or sensitive objects.
  • Assisting in the annual inventory process as established by the central office or other directives.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

Basic Qualifications: You must be a student accepted for enrollment or enrolled and seeking a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) in a qualifying educational institution, on a full or half-time basis (as defined by the institution in which the student is enrolled).

For GS-5: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-4 level that has included such activities as in collections management, registration, cataloging, research, preservation, restoration, or conservation of collections of museum material.

Specialized experience is experience using the tools, techniques, procedures, or methods related to the operation of a museum or similar collection, or to the handling, storage, care, protection, or recordkeeping of such a collection. Experience may have been gained in a museum, college or university, antique shop, commercial art gallery or other setting involving work with collections of valuable objects or specimens requiring specialized care and handling.

Substitution of Education for Experience: Education may be substituted for experience. Four years of education above the high school level or a bachelor’s degree from accredited educational institutions.
