Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ), Subaru Telescope, located in Hilo, Hawaii. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.


DUTIES: Leads and directs the Summit Telescope Technicians and performs the summit operation tasks. Shares responsibilities of the observatory documentation management efforts, especially in the area related to training of crews with materials in cooperation with other teams. Records activities and prepares reports related to troubleshooting, repair, maintenance, and upgrade work. Holds overall responsibility for daytime summit activities. Coordinates all daytime summit activities by the observatory and/or visiting teams. Manages safety throughout the summit facilities and takes corrective measures as needed.

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Engineering or a related field. EXPERIENCE: Four to five (4-5) years of experience in technical field, engineering, project operation, or related field. ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS: Working knowledge of mechanical and/or electrical engineering. Working knowledge of various modern application software, including word processors and spreadsheet software. Knowledge of safety management. Good communication skills and ability to interact with English- and/or Japanese-speaking Engineers, Technicians, Administrators, and Operations team staff. Must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission. Must possess Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain the certificate following the training provided within twelve months of hire). PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to work at 14,000 feet and pass a post offer high-altitude medical examination.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS: Experience at high-altitude telescope site and knowledge in astronomical telescope/equipment.
