Summer 2013 Environmental Engineering Student Co-op - 04085 Description
      Job Summary

The renewable energy team is tasked with ensuring compliance with PA 295 Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) goals and targets. Notable among these requirements is a target of 10% renewable energy sales by 2015, and installation of 300 MW by 2013 and an additional 300 MW by 2015. These requirements require an aggressive effort to ensure compliance.

The renewable energy team, and particularly the wind energy team, is implementing a wind development strategy to meet the above-mentioned targets. In doing so, team efforts require a unique set of skills ranging from wind resource assessment and wind turbine siting to managing land and accompanying obligations required for siting, and activities associated with the communities involved. Currently, this effort is executed by three team members, with extensive assistance from consultants and contractors. As a result of the critical role this team plays, an additional team member is sought to support the team, and develop the skills required to provide additional support, and depth, to the current team, and in the event of future changes to the team. To ensure this new team member's success and knowledge transfer, they will be partnered and mentored by the team's program manager of wind development.

      Key Accountabilities

      - Wind Resource Assessment – assist in wind data collection, management, and evaluation as it
relates to wind site planning, development, and operation – data sourced from meteorological
towers (METs) and Sonic Detection and Ranging (SODAR) units.
      - Wind Farm Performance Prediction and Assessment – assist in assessing/predicting
performance of future wind energy projects and evaluation of performance of current wind energy
      - Wind Technologies – assist in evaluating technical trends in wind equipment development such
as improvements in turbine performance through improvements to drive train components, turbine
      blade design, etc.
      - Wind Turbine and Facility Siting – assist in assessing optimal turbine layouts, constraints
analyses, and supporting work which might include wildlife studies, noise evaluations, shadow
      flicker modeling, etc.
      - Wind Project Real Estate Management – assist in maintaining data bases related to land
agreements, including agreement records management, confidentiality control, and planning for
agreement obligations such as payments, terminations, crop damage, etc. – this role would also
involve assisting in integrating land agreement information into a land management data base and
system for ensuring payment of financial commitments set forth in various land agreements.
      - Wind Energy Continuous Improvement Support – assist wind team in implementation of
continuous improvement efforts related to the wind dev process.
