Human Rights Firsts Outreach & Engagement, Refugee Representation is committed to advancing the rights of refugees, including the right to seek asylum. We advocate for access to asylum, for fair asylum procedures, and for U.S. compliance with international refugee and human rights law. We also help hundreds of individual refugees in the United States each year to win asylum through our pro bono Outreach & Engagement, Refugee Representation. Our advocacy is informed by the experiences of our refugee clients and their pro bono lawyers.
Human Rights First is welcoming applications for Summer 2014 undergraduate or graduate interns in its Outreach & Engagement, Refugee Representation . We are looking for currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate students with a strong interest in and commitment to human rights. Interns will be based in Human Rights Firsts New York office and will be expected to work full time for a 10-12 week period. This is an unpaid internship. Interns will be responsible for securing their own funding or arranging to receive course credit at their schools.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Outreach & Engagement, Refugee Representation Support
- Document drafting;
- Database maintenance;
- News monitoring;
- Filing; and
- Other duties as needed.
EDUCATION : Currently enrolled in a graduate or undergraduate program at an accredited school.
- Assist with our annual Case Status Update project, which requires outreach to pro bono attorneys and current or former clients about the status of their immigration case;
- Assist staff in conducting intake interviews with potential asylum clients by taking notes, providing interpretation services (depending on foreign language ability), and writing interview-based reports with extensive country research;
PAID/UNPAID INTERNSHIP: Unpaid
START DATE : Late May/early June 2014
TIME COMMITMENT : Full time, minimum of 12 weeks.
