The Lighting and Energy Management group is responsible for design and development of building automation and control devices such as:

- Networked Lighting controls such as dimmers and relay modules

- Networked Occupancy Sensors

- Digitally controlled Fluorescent ballasts and LED drivers

- Smart Power Meters

- Motorized window shades

- Smart Thermostats

These devices work as part of an integrated network communicating wirelessy, over RS485 or Ethernet allowing intelligent control of commercial and residential buildings.

Interns are sought to work on one or more of the projects listed below:

1. Develop a method to reproduce AC line noise conditions in the laboratory

a. Create means to record AC line noise from field installations

b. Create means to playback the line noise in the lab allowing Crestron dimmers to tested against those conditions

c. Develop methods to detect flicker in the light output of dimmers caused by the line noise

2. Investigate new switching power supply circuits to reduce conducted emissions

a. Perform emissions testing on various new topologies to identify suitable options

b. Aid in redesign of existing power supplies

3. Refine occupancy sensor algorithms to improve sensitivity while avoiding false triggering.

a. Perform experiments to determine detection patterns

b. Develop algorithms in firmware to prevent false triggering due to air vents or other sources of noise

c. Investigate the use of sound to identify if a room is occupied

4. Evaluate various LED light sources / fixtures being introduced and verify compatibility with Crestron dimmers

5. Evaluate new dimming curves to improve light output linearity from dimmers when controlling different light sources
