This position is responsible for ensuring the Monticello Railroad Quality Assurance Program is followed so all railcar repair work is performed in accordance with Association of American Railroad (AAR) requirements and other relevant standards and regulations to ensure all railcars are safe to operate. Failure of the railcars in Luminant service and in PRB service jeopardizes the safety of employees and the public, enhances the liability of the Luminant with other entities including regulatory agencies, and jeopardizes the efficient operations of the power plants.
This position provides supervision and technical expertise concerning railcar maintenance including but not limited to draft systems, truck systems, brake systems, dump systems, etc.
This position also provides technical expertise in matters dealing with AAR interchange rules, AAR M-214 rules, and AAR M-1003 Quality Assurance rules.
Key Roles & Responsibilities Other duties may be assigned. Directly or through others, the incumbent will:
Responsible for ensuring Monticello Railroad adheres to AAR interchange rules, AAR M-214 rules, and AAR M-1003 Quality Assurance rules as well as FRA rules.
Responsible for inspecting welding and reconditioning performed on railcar sideframes, bolsters, and draft systems.
Responsible for ensuring non-conforming work is documented and followed up with documented corrective and preventive actions.
Responsible for ensuring all tools and gauges used at Monticello Railroad are calibrated on an annual basis.
Responsible for being the subject matter expert on the Monticello Railroad Quality System in such a way as to answer all AAR auditor questions sufficiently.
Responsible for ensuring all workmen are trained appropriately on the Monticello Railroad Quality System.
Responsible for maintaining documentation associated with Monticello Railroad Quality System such as training records, audit report, nonconformance reports, etc.
Ability to read and understand work instructions. Ability to read and understand work orders, rules and regulations.
Ability to support and assist other employees.
Ability to evaluate and recommend various work processes for improvements.
Expertise in commonly used concepts, practices and procedures for repairing railcars.
Trained in use of welding and air arcing machine, hand tools, air tools and gauges.
Utilize available resources to maintain accurate, detailed, and acceptable records of equipment and components to ensure timely and effective maintenance.
Ensure materials and equipment are available as required under normal and/or emergency conditions to meet the needs for railcar maintenance.
Comply with safety policies and procedures to ensure a safe working environment.
Interface with maintenance staff, railroad operations groups, other Luminant personnel, and vendors/contractors to ensure consistent, practical, and effective maintenance support.
Implement and enforce safety policy and procedures to ensure a safe working environment and increase employee safety awareness.
Effectively interface with support staff and other Luminant superintendents to ensure consistent work practices and sharing of knowledge to optimize efforts in performing solid fuel delivery activities.
Work in the role of Railroad Maintenance Foreman or Railroad Operations Foreman as directed by the Railroad Maintenance Superintendent.
Participate in special projects and committee assignments as requested.
Education, Experience, & Skill Requirements
Minimum Five (5) years proven supervisory/management experience.
Work experience as a railcar maintenance craftsman is preferred.
Bachelors degree or higher in business or engineering, or High School diploma/GED with eight years in related field preferred
Demonstrated ability to manage budgets.
Knowledge of railroad maintenance, operations, equipment, and track structures as well as applicable Company policies, State and Federal regulations.
Demonstrated leadership experience that promotes achievement, goal setting, and supervising diverse work groups.
Related experience that promotes development in the areas described by the major accountabilities and key competencies of this job.
Computer skills demonstrated at a proficient level.
Work experience with AAR M-1003 Quality Assurance rules preferred.
Certification in 2G standard FCAW weld process is preferred.

Frequently required to walk an entire train set (approximately 1.5 miles) to inspect cars
