As a Supervisory Biomedical Engineer in the Office of Environmental Health and Engineer, Division of Health Facilities, you will direct the Biomedical/Clinical Engineering Program for the entire Albuquerque Area Indian Health Service.

IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENT - In accordance with the IHS Employee Immunization policy, selectee will be required to be immunized against measles and rubella by providing documentation/proof of immunity to measles and rubella prior to entrance on duty. Exceptions are persons born before 1957 who are not required to take the measles vaccine or provide proof of immunity. Special consideration may be allowed to individuals who are allergic to a component of vaccine or have a history of severe reaction to a vaccine or who are currently pregnant. This applies to candidates for positions in any Service Unit or any Area Office position which requires regular work at a Service Unit.

Oversee the entire Biomedical/Clinical Engineering Program.
Ensure compliance with accreditation requirements of the medical equipment program and related building utility standards.
Prepare technical reports and papers on complex biomedical/clinical engineering matters.
Prepare routine status reports of program activities.
Perform hands-on functions and repairs of medical equipment.
Calibrate a variety of medical/dental equipment consisting of multiple sub-systems and components.
Serve as Contracting Officer's Representative for equipment service contracts.

Applicants must possess the Basic Requirements and Specialized Experience to quality for this position.

Basic Requirement:
Applicants must meet ONE of the following criteria:
A. I have a bachelor's or higher degree in professional engineering from an ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) accredited school.

B. I have a bachelor's or higher degree in professional engineering. The curriculum included differential and integral calculus and courses (beyond first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics.

C. I am currently registered as a professional engineer by a state in the U.S., the District of Columbia, Guam, or Puerto Rico. I also have college-level education, training, and/or technical experience that furnished (1) a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying professional engineering, and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering.

D. I have completed all the requirements for either (a) a bachelor's degree in engineering technology (ABET) from an accredited college or university that included 60 semester hours of courses in the physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences, or (b) a ABET from a program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET); and I have successfully passed the Engineer-in-Training (EIT) examination, or the written test required for professional registration, that is administered by the Boards of Engineering Examiners in the various states, the District of Columbia, Guam, and Puerto Rico.

E. I have a combination of at least 4 years of college-level education, training, and/or technical experience that included successful completion of at least 60 semester hours of courses in the physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences, including the courses listed in paragraph B above. The courses are fully acceptable toward meeting the requirements of a professional engineering curriculum.

F. I have a bachelor's degree in engineering technology or in an appropriate professional field (for example, physics, chemistry, architecture, computer science, mathematics, hydrology, or geology); and I have at least one full year of professional engineering experience equivalent to the GS-5 grade level that was acquired under a professional training program or under professional engineering supervision and guidance (submit documentation to support your eligibility under this criteria).

IN ADDITION TO MEETING THE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, APPLICANTS MUST POSSESS THE FOLLOWING SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:

One year of professional environmental engineering experience, equivalent to the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service, overseeing an environmental program in a medical environment; ensuring compliance with accreditation requirements of a medical equipment program and related building utility standards; calibrating a variety of medical and dental equipment; consulting with unit personnel in providing biomedical engineering advisory services; developing a comprehensive environmental program; establishing guidelines and procedures for implementation of biomedical equipment controls; and preparing technical report and papers on highly complex biomedical/clinical engineering matters.

Foreign Education: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show that the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program.
