UMKC IS Support Services is looking for a Support System Administrator. This professional IT position spans a wide range of in-depth support activities to ensure the proper configuration and functioning of desktop computers, network printers, peripherals, servers and their connectivity to the network. This is a second-tier desktop support position within the central IT support team with a primary focus of supporting the faculty, staff and students in the School of Biological Sciences (SBS) on the UMKC Volker Campus. This position must be capable of providing advanced support for both Windows and Macintosh operating systems. They must be able to work within the support team to assist with lab management and coordinate IT purchases for SBS. A high degree of interaction with people is involved; therefore sound customer service principles must be applied while fulfilling the technical function in a timely manner. Work includes a wide range of responsibilities in providing high-level support and will overlap with some duties of other title series. This position will troubleshoot and perform hardware and software installations, configuration, upgrades, and enhancements.

Minimum Qualifications

Expansive knowledge of desktop/workstation hardware, Windows and Mac OS X operating systems (configuration, imaging, connectivity). Excellent technical knowledge and aptitude in the areas of enterprise management technology for both Windows and Apple Mac platforms. Must have a good understanding of applicable software, networks, storage devices and troubleshooting techniques. Familiarity with systems administration and security principles. Familiarity with Active Directory and Microsoft Exchange, as well as support for wireless technologies. Practical knowledge of scripting and one or more programming languages appropriate for software development in multi-use/multi-tasking environments. Provide specialized support for departmental approved applications as well as coordinate and troubleshoot specialized hardware devices in research labs specific to School of Biological Sciences. Use development tools and group policy modeling to assess, simulate and manage the schools groups and users and enforce policies. Manage departmental servers in coordination with Information Services server teams. Respond to campus computer security issues and virus incidents to ensure system integrity. Isolate and repair or rebuild compromised machines. Assist in troubleshooting security issues and escalate to security officer as necessary. Perform back-up or recovery procedures when needed. Integrate different computing systems for users if possible and when necessary. Address compatibility issues to achieve the maximum efficiency and functionality under the conditions.

Strong verbal and written communication skills sufficient to document technical procedures as well as interact with a variety of users and other technical staff. Must have strong customer service skills, a positive attitude and professional demeanor. Effective communication and interpersonal skills - sufficient to effectively elicit IT information from users, conduct occasional training sessions, promote education and awareness training and document IT related procedures. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of a work assignment and to participate as a member of a cross departmental project team. Ability to do basic web editing. Time management skills and organizational ability for project management. Ability to work under pressure; meet inflexible deadlines; deal with frustrated individuals while maintaining composure. Ability to coordinate, train, supervise, work as a team or manage the activities of others to accomplish goals.
