The position supports the NEA’s strategic objective to focus the energy and resources of its 3+ million members toward the promotion of public education by providing technical expertise in systems administration in a complex, multi-server Web-centric technical infrastructure.

Position Summary: The primary responsibilities of this position involve installing, configuring, maintaining, and performing system integration testing of Linux and Unix-based operating systems, related utilities, hardware and core applications. Responsible for troubleshooting Linux and Unix-based hardware and software problems. Monitors systems activities and fine tunes system parameters and configuration to optimize performance and ensure security of systems. Performs capacity analysis, monitors and controls usage of disk space. Develops procedures for routine administration including backup/restore, shutdown, and startup. Provides recommendations for improving the server environment, such as capacity thresholds, security gaps, patch levels and hardware lifecycle management. Troubleshoots and resolves complex problems to ensure minimal disruption of mission-critical applications. Ability to quickly become proficient with emerging hardware and software products as they become available. Creates utility programs and scripts using common high level scripting languages. Manages and maintains systems in accord with proper change management and documentation procedures. To carry out duties and responsibilities, the incumbent uses a personal computer and related software and travels frequently.

Required Skills

Tier 1 (Essential): Proven expertise working as team member with significant responsibility in all phases of systems administration, installation, implementation, troubleshooting and problem resolution. Demonstrated experience and expertise with Linux, UNIX, and some Windows 2008 systems administration, emphasizing monitoring of system resource usage, network configuration, and release upgrades. Proven experience installing and configuring RedHat Enterprise Linux and Apache including demonstrated expertise in all phases of web infrastructure administration. Experience working with VMWare or Windows virtual environments. Demonstrated experience in supporting OpenText CMS, WebLogic, JBoss, and IBM Identity and Access Management (Tivoli). Proven understanding of Open Source technologies, such as Drupal, Wordpress, Rsync, OpenLDAP, Tomcat, and Kerberos. Proven experience administering secure Web sites (SSL) and search engines, including Verity. Proven understanding of hardware and software-based load-balancing, failover, and clustering technologies. Demonstrated experience in the maintenance of standards and policies for software releases, deployments, migrations, and maintenance, and shell scripting. Knowledge of TCP/IP networking, NAT, and PAT. Demonstrated high-level analytical, interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work independently and collaboratively. Proven flexibility and effectiveness in handling multiple and complex projects simultaneously under stringent timeframes and changing priorities/conditions. Experience with best practices for enforcing system security. Successful references. Tier 2 (Significant ): Extensive experience in writing and testing disaster recovery scenarios. Experience administering LDAP, particularly Active Directory and Open LDAP. Tier 3 (Desirable) : Knowledge of firewalls, intrusion detection software, messaging software, and PeopleSoft Internet Architecture (PIA). Experience with clustered applications, Oracle and SQL database administration. Knowledge of programs and objectives of the Information Technology Services department.

Required Experience

MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIREMENT : Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills may be acquired. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS : Minimum of five years of progressively responsible business-oriented experience involving the administration of Linux and UNIX server operations as required for enterprise system planning, design, integration, installation, implementation and support of a complex multi-system server environment. OTHER REQUIREMENTS : Normal work hours will be mid/late morning to early/late evening (depending on departmental needs), occasional extended hours, and on weekends. Technical documentation, system diagrams or other samples of work products may be required at time of interview. Some travel required (15-20 overnights per year).
