The iPlant Collaborative (iPlant) is a cyberinfrastructure collaborative that is working to address grand challenges identified by the plant sciences community. iPlant brings together plant biologists, computer and information scientists and engineers, as well as experts from other disciplines, all working in integrated teams. The iPlant cyberinfrastructure integrates various large-scale computing infrastructures, such as grid, HPC, and cloud with bleeding edge technologies.

iPlant is seeking a highly enthusiastic, highly motivated UNIX Systems Administrator, Senior or Systems Administrator, Principal to work within the Core Services Team, a unit responsible for implementing and managing the core infrastructure (i.e. the network, hardware, servers, applications, and storage) of iPlant. Working with members of the Core Services Team, the Systems Administrator, Principal will perform the standard activities of systems administration, such as monitoring and maintaining the availability, performance, and security of the core infrastructure; however, the ideal candidate will have a propensity to create great shell scripts (or programs), have the creativity to integrate open-source software into a production environment, and have holistic understanding of applications, operating systems, security, networks, and storage. Much of the position will involve working with bleeding-edge technologies, such as cloud, high performance storage, HPC, and compute grids.

This position will may require occasional periods in which tasks must be done after or before normal business hours.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Gathering and identifying technical requirements from iPlant staff, developers, and users.
  • Analyzing, installing, configuring, and maintaining the core infrastructure, including the network, hardware, servers, applications and storage.
  • Troubleshooting core infrastructure issues.
  • Monitoring and optimizing the iPlant's systems to ensure 24x7 service availability.
  • Developing network and system performance metrics; creating periodic reports on current performance levels.
  • Managing software licensing.
  • Implementing and maintaining data backup and disaster recovery plans.
  • Assisting with infrastructure capacity planning.
  • Writing scripts and programs as necessary.
  • Responding to support requests.
Arizona Board of Regents Minimum Qualifications

Systems Administrator, Senior
Five years of progressively responsible system administration and/or programming experience including the installation, testing and maintenance of hardware, operating and applications systems and utilities; OR, Associate's degree in Management Information Systems, Computer Information Technology or related field AND four years of progressively responsible system administration and/or programming experience including the installation, testing and maintenance of hardware, operating and applications systems and utilities; OR, Bachelor's degree in Management Information Systems, Computer Information Technology or related field AND two years of progressively responsible system administration and/or programming experience including the installation, testing and maintenance of hardware, operating and applications systems and utilities; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.

Systems Administrator, Principal
Six years of progressively responsible system administration and/or programming experience including systems analysis, planning and development and at least two years of experience leading technical projects and/or teams; OR, Associate's degree in Management Information Systems, Computer Information Technology or related field AND five years of progressively responsible system administration and/or programming experience including systems analysis, planning and development and at least two years of experience leading technical projects and/or teams; OR, any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.

Additional Minimum Qualifications

FOR SENIOR:
  • At least five years of experience in Linux/UNIX systems administration and network administration.
  • Experience in systems and network performance analysis.
  • Must have demonstrable experience in installing, configuring, and maintaining open-source software.
  • Must have demonstrable experience in testing updates and patches to production servers (i.e. servers that must be highly available).
  • Must have knowledge about modern networking technologies and protocols.
  • Must have a good understanding about network services, such as DNS, DHCP, NFS, LDAP, etc.
  • Must have an excellent understanding about security issues.
  • Experience with benchmarking and reporting tools.
  • Experience in writing programs in a UNIX programming language, UNIX shell scripts, or comparable programming language.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a team environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
FOR PRINCIPAL:
  • [Bachelors + 6 Years of experience]
  • At least five years of experience in Linux/UNIX systems administration, network administration, or software development.
  • Experience in systems and network performance analysis.
  • Must have demonstrable experience in installing, configuring, and maintaining open-source software.

  • Experience with integrating specialized computing and storage infrastructures, such as cloud storage/computing, HPCs, grid computing, and distributed storage.
  • Experience with routing and switch configuration is a plus.
FOR PRINCIPAL:
  • Experience with integrating specialized computing and storage infrastructures, such as cloud storage/computing, HPCs, grid computing, and distributed storage.
  • Experience with routing and switch configuration is a plus.
  • Experience with infiniband (storage and networking) and 10g ethernet networking.
