R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company is seeking a Systems Engineer with experience in the design, development and scale-up (to commercialization) of micro-electronic consumer products. The position requires an engineer who is responsible for all electrical engineering aspects of products based on micro-controller embedded systems from ideation to manufacture. As a consequence, experience in the design of hardware and software for microcontroller-based embedded systems is a must requirement. The engineer will work in a multidisciplinary R&D group and must be capable of executing projects which lead to the development/ implementation of electrical systems and processes in support of the base cigarette business, as well as RJRT’s programs in harm reduction, vapor product development and smokeless tobacco. As a member of a particularly comprehensive R&D research effort, responsibilities for this position may range from technology-innovation scouting and insight analysis to the development of full-scale manufacturing equipment and process design. The technologies of interest are often new to the world (or new to tobacco science) and will cover a wide variety of work streams ranging from the development of novel laboratory instrumentation to product design and design of manufacturing equipment. This individual must be able to perform in a highly diverse, multi-functional environment and communicate effectively to deliver against goals. In addition, the engineer must be able to collaborate effectively across numerous functional areas and with outside vendors to solve problems, provide insight and develop scientific strategies for evaluating and improving processes and/or materials in high speed manufacturing processes.

The engineer must possess excellent project management skills, be able to effectively manage multiple projects and possess good time management skills in order to meet aggressive deadlines. Additionally, the position will interact with multiple outside vendors, so strong communication and interpersonal skills are imperative. The successful candidate must be able to utilize sound scientific principles to provide innovative solutions to complex problems while adjusting direction as needs change. Good written communication skills will be required as some project work may lead to publication in peer-reviewed venues. Domestic and International travel are required at approximately the 20% level.

Key responsibilities will include:
1. Interaction with a diverse team of scientists and engineers to design and build electrical/ electronic systems in vapor-product prototypes.
2. Directing the work of outside vendors to develop new/improved processes and/or materials for a range of tobacco products.
3. Interaction with outside engineers to develop novel/improved circuitry for vapor products.
4. Development/implementation/scale-up of innovative product designs and/or materials that meet consumer needs.
5. Responsible for all electrical/electronic aspects of experimental design and prototype development in a multidisciplinary research team environment.
6. Supervision of external contract resources.
7. Project management (timelines, cost, good intra-group, as well as cross-functional, communication)
8. Ensuring that new technologies, processes and end products meet all external regulatory requirements (electrical/electronic) as well as RJRT Product Integrity standards.

This is a senior level position that requires both project management and strong engineering skills. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with chemists, engineers and product developers at all steps of innovative-product development work in an R&D environment. He/she will subsequently collaborate with Pilot-plant and Operations engineers to ensure smooth implementation of all required electrical/electronic systems for product manufacture.

Position Qualification:
B.S. or M.S. degree in Electrical Engineering with a minimum of 7 years experience in a product-development environment.
Hands-on experience in the design of small electrical systems in a product-development context.
Thorough knowledge of, and experience with, basic electrical system theory and system components (circuitry, batteries, capacitors, transistors, etc.)
Hands-on experience with analog and digital circuit design (including embedded logic control systems).
Basic scientific/engineering knowledge of electrical and thermal properties of materials.
Familiarity with low-power microcontroller systems;
Familiarity with high-volume product manufacture;
Ability to integrate system hardware and software;
Ability to read a system-requirements spec and create systems architecture for others to execute.
Ability to write factory test specifications to ensure production quality;
Ability to identify new technologies from other industries that are relevant to tobacco product development
Familiarity with regulatory requirements (FCC/UL/etc.) for electrical and electronic systems.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office software.
Excellent analytical problem-solving, decision-making and negotiating skills
Excellent project management and team work skills
Must be capable of conceiving and executing original research projects.
Excellent interpersonal, written/oral communication and presentation skills.

Proficiency with circuit-design software, CAD software and/or mathematical computation software (e.g., MatLab).
Familiarity with electro-mechanical components (e.g., pressure transducers or micro-actuators)
Familiarity with electro-optical and or electro-thermal system components (e.g., diodes, piezo-electric sensors, resistance heaters, etc.)
Ability to conceptualize mechanisms to automate a manual process.
Understanding of equipment qualification processes and final-acceptance testing;
Experience with product/equipment qualification in an FDA-regulated environment.
Experience refining and implementing Marketing concepts.

Though not mandatory, experience in the biomedical device industry would be a particularly valuable qualification for this position.
