Responsible for lining up and isolating one or more generating units of a steam and gas turbine electric generating plant. Also, responsible for placing clearances and isolating equipment with Electric Supervisor approval.

Essential Job Functions

  • Inspect and monitor plant equipment and system levels, pressures, and temperatures.
  • Monitor for vibrations, unusual noise, leaks, and abnormal temperatures.
  • Conduct visual inspection of plant equipment and systems by way of gauges, piping, valves, recorders and computer control system.
  • Maintain switching, water usage, water chemistry and facility logs.
  • Place lock out tags on equipment and verify equipment matches tag out sheet.
  • Verify placement of equipment and ensure all devices are in specified positions.
  • Perform all manual switching and ensure proper procedures are followed.
  • Ensure proper safety equipment is used during switching.
  • Ensure compliance with safety, environmental and regulatory compliance requirements.
  • Work with Mechanics and Technicians to perform routine maintenance and outage activities.
  • Perform ongoing measurable training assignments as needed or assigned to strengthen knowledge.


  • Preferred Knowledge - Abilities & Skills

    Education/ Experience
    • Six months to one year of advanced study or training with power plants
    • 2-3 years experience as an Auxiliary Operator
    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
    • Knowledge of Boiler and Power Plant Operations
    • Maintenance skills in mechanical and instruments
    Licenses & Certifications 

    Valid Class C Texas driver's license or ability to achieve a Texas Driver’s license

    Physical Tasks & Working Conditions

    The incumbent works in a power plant environment; occasional exposure to unpleasant environmental condition and/or hazards; occasional outside work.

    May be assigned to any schedule, any number of hours or shifts including rotating shifts. This position requires random drug testing. This position requires annual security clearance. Willing to maintain and answer a phone 24-7

    Minimum Education & Work Experience 

    Six months of advanced study or training with electric generating equipment 
    2 years related experience 
    Ability to maintain and answer a phone 24-7
    Or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.
