Job Summary : Using discretion and judgment, under the direction of the Tax Manager and Tax Supervisor, follows established procedures, guidelines and processes. Performs mutual fund regulatory and tax reporting functions in a manner that ensures fund objectives. Principle Responsibilities : Reviews simple federal, state, city income, franchise tax returns, excise tax returns, and state and federal license fee forms for MFS mutual funds. Prepares tax work papers and distribution analyses for MFS mutual funds. Analyze simple general ledger accounts to provide roll-forward of tax accounts and to identify items of income/expense that would require a tax treatment different than book (i.e., complex securities. Carries out and implements tax accounting policies and procedures. Maintains current knowledge of SEC and IRS compliance and tax law requirements. Coordinates efforts and data collection needs with the Fund Treasury unit. Prepares and updates compliance calendar to help ensure that tax filings are made timely. Provides information as required to external audit firms. Assists in gathering information needed to respond to IRS and/or state auditor requests in connection with formal or informal audits. Performs other related responsibilities as requested. Qualifications: Bachelor's degree or equivalent education. Minimum of 1 -2 years tax-specific experience in mutual fund accounting and/or taxation, compliance, auditing or related business activity. Knowledge of tax accounting laws and procedures applicable to investment companies. Attention to detail and time management skills. Strong business writing skills and strong oral communication skills. Demonstrated computer proficiency and working knowledge of "off the shelf" and custom office software applications. Strong interpersonal skills with an ability to interact in a positive manner with employees in other MFS departments and with outside Fund Auditors.
