JOB TITLE: Literacy Specialist

School Director (primary evaluator), Senior Literacy Specialist, English Content Specialist (coaches and secondary evaluators)

Ensure that all students on campus are receiving appropriately rigorous literacy instruction that builds and improves upon their reading abilities in order to prepare them for the critical thinking, writing, and reading required by a four-year college (and beyond).

The Literacy Specialist develops and successfully implements a multi-tier reading intervention program at his/her campus as a result of which . . .
All students grow at least one and a half grade levels in reading per year as defined by R-CBM, MAZE, and/or MAP testing
95% of students graduate middle- and high- school able to read at or above grade-level
All students pass the Reading / ELA TAKS at each grade level
The attrition rate of its LEP and at-risk reader population year to year is equal to or lower than the attrition rate of the general student population
Depending on campus structure, help ensure that YES Prep complies with all state and federal laws and policies regarding our LEP population
All teachers feel comfortable differentiating for readers of all levels and feel equipped with adequate literacy resources to do so
The Literacy Specialist participates in the following teams to effectively perform the duties of the position:
System-wide literacy specialist team
Campus Reading Teacher Team
Ability to float to any/all grade level teams, as needed
Recommended: Instructional Team
In addition, the literacy specialist has a coaching relationship with intervention and reading teachers to provide support and successfully achieve the outcomes listed above.

(1) Conduct Benchmark Assessments
Plan for, train teachers in, and oversee campus administration of literacy benchmark assessments at beginning, middle, and end of year for all sixth- and seventh-grade students, new students, and targeted older students
Analyze benchmark data to make recommendations for student placement, instruction, and to assess and improve upon overall program and teacher effectiveness
Create and present a meta-analysis of mid-year and end-of-year literacy data to school director and other relevant teams (instructional, leadership, grade level)
Approach data collection as a scientific task and conduct data analysis with an objective, critical, growth-oriented mindset
(2) Progress Monitor Students
Ensure all reading teachers are collecting at least bi-weekly progress monitoring assessments for all students enrolled in a reading intervention
Monitor AIMSWEB (data collection website) to ensure that teachers are entering reading data and identify bright spots, trends, and growth areas
Assist teachers in interpreting and adjusting reading instruction in response to progress monitoring data
Communicate student progress to relevant grade level teams and other stakeholders
(3) Direct interventions for struggling readers and LEP student population
Use data to group students into at least three tiers of ability-level groupings, and provide targeted, research-based instruction to support student reading growth
Work with School Director to schedule structured intervention times
Utilize resources provided by Senior Literacy Specialist to implement appropriate interventions for all tiers of readers
Train teachers to carry out interventions and support teacher growth throughout the year through data-driven conversations, observations and coaching feedback
Directly instruct students in reading intervention classes
Facilitate a weekly or bi-weekly meeting of all reading teachers to plan curriculum, analyze data, and adjust instruction or create action steps for students of concern
(4) Provide professional development sessions that encourage rigorous literacy instruction at all grade levels and across the content areas
Provide general and/or content-specific campus and/or district PD for teachers specific to promoting literacy in the content classroom and differentiating for LEP or low readers
Provide individualized planning support for teachers, as needed, on how to differentiate for readers at different levels
Support teachers as needed and as time allows via sample teaches, videos, sample lesson plans, peer observations, coaching feedback, and data-driven conversations
Collaborate with Instructional Team to better support teachers in implementing highly effective literacy instruction
Advise Admin Team on aspects of scheduling
Communicate recommendations of the Literacy Specialist Team to the administration and teachers at the campus
Meet with SPED, LEP coordinator (and ELA/reading teachers as needed) bi-weekly to develop robust, differentiated literacy instruction that supports all special populations
(5) Collaborate with Librarian and ELA teachers to implement programming that motivates and inspires students to become lifelong readers
Assist in execution of literacy-based programs (book clubs, reading initiative programs, literary service groups, etc.), as needed
Assist librarian in events such as book fairs, book clubs, and other reading initiatives, as needed
Work with ELA teachers and Librarian to craft appropriately leveled, differentiated summer reading and other independent reading assignments, as needed
(6) Procure and maintain literacy resources that enable teachers to meet the needs of all readers
Ensure that all teachers have access to resources they need to provide appropriately rigorous instruction for all students
Manage and maintain literacy resources (bookroom / intervention programs / library materials / instructional supports subscriptions / instructional books, etc.)
(7) Fulfill other responsibilities
Teach 4 class periods per day or the schedule agreed upon by the campus
Perform other duties as assigned by campus leadership or home office personnel

Auxiliary Roles may include:
Serving as ELL Coordinator and maintaining compliance for LEP concerns
Create/ maintain record system for LEP population at campus
Work with the Registrar to obtain existing documentation about students and following appropriate procedures to ensure students receive appropriate services regarding LEP needs
Serve as LPAC representative
Oversee OLPT testing, as needed
Oversee TELPAS training and testing
Oversee LAT testing, as needed
Attends ARD’s of LEP population who have special needs
Create uniform accommodation/ modification scales for LEP population on major assessments and communicate to teachers
Proctoring major standardized assessments (TAKS, SAT, PSAT, MAP, AP)
Acting as campus liaison during district Literacy Specialist meetings and content days
Participating as a member of or occasional advisor to Instructional Team, or other campus/ district teams, as deemed appropriate
Advising students in homeroom/advisory
Completing campus duties such as morning, lunch, or afternoon duties
Demonstrate behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible;
Participate in workshops, seminars, and conferences to enhance knowledge and skills;
Demonstrate knowledge, and support of YES Prep Schools mission, values, standards, policies and procedures, confidentiality standards, Employee Field Guide expectations and code of ethical behavior as stated in the Field Guide;
Ensure compliance with all state and federal laws, local board policies, administrative guidelines, and the Texas Educators’ Code of Ethics;
Serve as appropriate role model for YES Prep colleagues, students, staff, and parents;
Conduct self in a professional manner at all times;
Ability to perform a variety of tasks, often changing assignments on short notice, with little to no direction;
Ability to communicate effectively and appropriately with others.

The ideal candidate for this position will possess the following:

Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited educational institution.

At least two (2) years of teaching experience (preferably in literacy and language).

Job Specific Knowledge/Skills:
Knowledge of basic literacy and language acquisition principles
Strong instructional expertise and the ability to make practical use of data in the classroom
Ability to facilitate instruction in small groups and provide individual student interventions
Familiarity with various reading / literacy intervention strategies
Knowledge of state and federal guidelines and requirements for serving English language learners
Excellent written and oral communication, planning, and organizational skills
Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to set expectations and follow up with coworkers
Familiarity and working knowledge of both state and national assessment measures
Ability to read, interpret, evaluate, and implement principles of scientifically based reading research

10-month position; evening and weekend commitments also will be required
