Job Description
Researchers at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), in partnership with the Department of Homeland Securitys Science and Technology Directorate, is leading an R&D effort intended to create the next generation of technologies and tools related to information analysis, communication and information sharing, collaboration, and visualization of information to support decision making and operations within the emergency operations domain.

To develop the requirements for these environments, PNNL adopted a user centered design philosophy where the user is involved in all aspects of the research from requirements definition, scenario and use case development, envisioning, and feature development.
We are looking for user-experience design interns with great design skills and the eagerness to apply what youve been learning.

As an intern on this project you will be working closely with senior designers, research scientists, developers and emergency response professionals to help design novel user interface prototypes across form factors like mobile, tablet, desktop workstations and interactive tables and walls. These prototypes will drive adaptive data triage and decision support that allows for role and activity based situation awareness through a dynamic, trainable filtering system. Intern responsibilities will range from user research, driving user requirements, writing scenario and use cases, establishing workflows, designing user experiences, production and usability testing.

Minimum Requirements
Candidates must be degree-seeking students enrolled at an accredited college or university.

Candidates must be taking at least 6 credit hours and have an overall GPA of 2.5.

Qualifications

Additional qualifications for this position include:
  • Undergraduate student or recent graduate in Interaction Design, Graphic Design, Digital Media Design, Industrial Design, Human Computer Interaction, Computer Science or other closely related fields.
  • Excellent visual design, interaction design, product design skills and experiences in designing interactive demos and user interfaces for complex systems and products.
  • Proficient with design applications like Adobe Illustrator & Photoshop
  • Experience with conducting user research and translating into design requirements
  • Proficiency in authoring UI specifications and presentations
  • Experience in rapid prototyping in Flash or Java is a plus.
