MDRC is seeking a Technical Research Analyst to join our Family Well-Being and Children’s Development policy area in the New York office. Technical researchers help MDRC maintain the highest standards of data quality and integrity. MDRC receives data files from a variety of sources and in a variety of formats. Technical researchers convert these data files to a form that is useful for answering research questions. Technical researchers often participate actively in quantitative analyses, and, because most of MDRC’s data collection is of primary data, technical researchers are at the cutting edge of policy research.
MDRC technical researchers have the unusual opportunity to work as part of multidisciplinary teams on current social policy issues in a dynamic and challenging environment. The successful candidate will work under the guidance and supervision of leading public policy researchers as well as leading researchers in the fields of developmental psychology, economics, sociology, and social work. This position will initially focus on building data collection systems, training program staff, and processing, cleaning, quality-checking, and analyzing data for a large-scale, multisite, rigorous test of home visiting programs for low-income families with young children.
Responsibilities include a range of technical and non-technical skills:
SAS computer programming to create variables, restructure data files, and perform data-cleaning operations,
Data collection and management,
Preparing training materials and training program staff on data collection,
Statistical and methodological analysis, and
Writing technical memos that document data processing decisions and summarize the quality of data.
Master’s degree in economics, public policy, sociology, psychology, computer programming, mathematics, or a related field preferred.
Experience applying quantitative research methods.
Comfortable working in a team-oriented and fast-paced environment.
Demonstrated interest in social policy issues affecting low-income children.
Experience with a statistical programming or database programming language (SAS preferred).
Experience with Microsoft Office (especially Word and Excel).
Strong research and technical writing skills.
Excellent attention to detail and ability to work with data.
Some on-the-job training is provided; salary and title contingent upon experience.
