MDRC is seeking a Technical Research Assistant to join our Family Well-Being and Children’s Development policy area in the New York office. The successful candidate will work under the guidance and supervision of leading public policy researchers as well as leading researchers in the fields of developmental psychology, economics, sociology, and social work. The Technical Research Assistant will initially focus on processing, quality-checking, and analyzing data for a large-scale rigorous test of a set of evidence-based strategies designed to improve the social and emotional development of children in Head Start classrooms.

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include a range of technical and nontechnical skills:
  • SAS computer programming to create variables, restructure data files, and perform data-cleaning operations
  • Statistical analysis
  • Writing technical memos that document data processing decisions and summarize the quality of data
  • Active involvement in various stages of producing reports, proposals, and papers (coordinating across authors, fact-checking, and documentation)
  • Work on producing public use files
Qualifications:

Candidates should have a BA/BS in economics, mathematics, public policy, sociology, statistics, developmental psychology, or related field. Successful candidates should have a demonstrated interest in social policy issues affecting low-income children, a good understanding of quantitative research methods, strong research and technical writing skills, excellent attention to detail, and ability to multi-task. Candidates should also be comfortable working in a team-oriented and fast-paced environment.

Some on-the-job training is provided; salary contingent upon experience.
