positions located in Stoughton, WI.

Key Responsibilities:
Develop, test, validate, and implement advanced filter media/materials to solve engineering problems in the field of air, liquid and crankcase ventilation systems applicable to diesel engines.

Utilize laboratory analytical techniques of Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Thermogravimetic Analysis (TGA), Fourier Transform Infrared Sepectroscopy (FTIR), SEM, and EDAX for polymers and elastomers identification and development to ensure degradation level and quality of existing and advanced filter media/materials applicable to diesel engines. Utilize Tensile Testing, Compression Set, Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA) and other material testing techniques to understand materials structure-property relationships and evaluate material performance in engine filtration applications. Determine the effects of thin coatings on filter media/material performance and characterize coatings with X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), Interferometry, and Time of Flight-Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy (TOF-SIMS). Work on Product Preceding Technology (PPT), Value Package Introduction (VPI), and Value Package Change (VPC) projects related to filter media/material development and validation. Utilize all media physicals including basis weight, Frazier Permeability, TSI, Mullen Burst, flow restriction and particle retention efficiency in media development. Develop media material that is easy to handle and manufacture. Work with peers within R&T to create media/material architecture and present it to the product groups to obtain feedback. Perform Design Failure Mode Effect Analysis to evaluate different concept filter media/material designs and develop new robust filter design. Support the development of filter medial material with optimized design functionality and create specification or use in diesel engine applications. Support customer engineers, product development engineers, account representatives, plant quality personnel, and other internal customers in filter media/material related issues. Validate existing and new media/material using Design Verification Planning and Reporting (DVP&R) to meet changing customer requirements. Perform line trials and ensure media/material optimum processability into a filter with low scrap rates. Guide the resolution of media/material failures issues through Failure Incident Report Group (FIRG) by implementing short term and long term corrective action plans. Implement Nanofiber Media in diesel engine air/crankcase/filtration applications using VPI and VPC processes. Champion the use of Design for Six Sigma tools in ongoing project and everyday work for robust product development. Collaborate with universities to develop new, improved, and validated filter media materials and testing techniques.

Develop new intellectual property by writing new invention disclosures to participate and contribute to Intellectual Property Blitzes. Create and implement media/material practices (FES) documents that specify the proper use of new testing methods, procedures and tools. Work with supply chain management to develop suppliers, reduce media costs, consolidate grades, and qualify new suppliers and paper mills.

Experience and Education:
Master’s Degree in Materials Engineering, or related field and 2 years of experience as a Materials Engineer, Development Engineer, or related position. Alternatively, the employer will accept a Bachelor’s Degree in Materials Engineering, or related field and 5 years of experience as a Materials Engineer, Development Engineer, or related position. Experience must have included: Product Preceding Technology (PPT), Value Package Introduction (VPI), and Value Package Change (VPC); Design for Six Sigma Tools; Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Thermogravimetic Analysis (TGA), Fourier Transform Infrared Sepectroscopy (FTIR), SEM, and EDAX; Tensile Testing, Compression Set, Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA); Design Failure Mode Effect Analysis; NanoFiber Media; X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy/ Interferometry; Design Verification Planning and Reporting (DVP&R).
