This position is located in the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Office of Surveillance, Epidemiology and Laboratory Services (OSELS), National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), Office of Information Systems.

Incumbent serves as a technical editorial and communications advisor to management. Advises on the most effective approach for communicating specific public health messages important to achieving public health objectives. Assists in defining the intended audience and determining the most appropriate method of presentation, including reviewing and advising on content of written materials and establishing the most appropriate writing style and layout design for the intended audience. Edits authored papers intended for submission to scientific journals and books; edits abstracts for presentation at scientific meetings, epidemic aid memoranda, programmatic and meeting reports, and a variety of other materials. Reviews materials for accuracy of scientific terminology, completeness and effectiveness in the presentation of textual, tabular, and graphic materials, completeness of reference citations, and other editorial requirements. Works as part of a communications team that conceptualizes, develops, and produces various written documents, such as Web pages, brochures, manuals, fact sheets, program reports, and other written materials. Serves as production manager for many of these projects and has responsibility for editing and overseeing various stages of production to meet deadlines and ensure materials are of the highest quality.

For GS-9 Grade Level:
A. Have one year of specialized experience, equivalent to the GS-7 grade level in the Federal service, assisting in technical writing, editing, and the production of scientific and technical documents to communicate information to various audiences.

OR

B. Have a master's or equivalent graduate degree or two full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D. that includes 15 semester hours in an appropriate scientific, technical, or social science field(s), and at least one course above the introductory level in the field(s) covered by the position.

OR

C. Have a combination of experience as described in "A" above and graduate education as described in "B" above.

For GS-11 Grade Level:
A. Have one year of specialized experience, equivalent to the GS-9 grade level in the Federal service, writing and editing scientific and technical documents to communicate information to various audiences.

OR

B. Have a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or three full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.M. that includes 15 semester hours in an appropriate scientific, technical, or social science field(s), and at least one course above the introductory level in the field(s) covered by the position.

OR

C. Have a combination of experience as described in "A" above and graduate education as described in "B" above.

Education must have included a total of 15 semester hours in an appropriate scientific, technical, or social science field(s), and at least one course above the introductory level in the field(s) covered by the position. For technical manuals and specifications writers or editors, the equivalent of 15 semester hours may have been gained through vocational or educational training above the high school level at a public, private, or Armed Forces school.

Foreign Education:
If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show that the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
