Job Description As an intern in technology and innovation policy, you will report directly to William Rinehart, the Director of Technology and Innovation Policy at the American Action Forum. Rinehart comes to the Forum from TechFreedom, where he served as the first Research Fellow. He was also previously the Director of Operations at the International Center for Law & Economics. In 2009, Rinehart was a Koch Summer Fellow at The Progress & Freedom Foundation, concentrating on advertising policy and Internet governance. In 2008, he was a Research Associate at the Illinois Policy Institute, where he studied state-level budget, energy and tax issues. Additionally, he worked for the Institute for Policy and Civic Engagement, researching technology and civic engagement.

Previous interns for Rinehart have completed the following projects:
  • Researched and authored policy primers on current privacy laws
  • Wrote blogs about telecommunication policy and regulatory reform efforts
  • Tracked and reported on current court cases and tech legislation
  • Provided research support for regulatory comments


As part of the internship, your responsibilities will include but are not limited to the following:
  • Research assistance: Interns will provide research assistance and data collection for their issue area director when in the office
  • Event attendance: Interns will attend Capitol Hill hearings, private speaker events, and events held by other DC think tanks to analyze and report on the information presented
  • Forum event support : Interns will help promote, run, and evaluate all Forum events
  • Semester project : Interns will write a paper on a topic of their choice to be completed by the end of the semester. Issue area directors will assist the interns with their research and writing

Hours and Compensation
  • Interns must be available for 20 to 32 hours per week
  • Interns will be provided an hourly wage to cover transportation and living expenses
  • Interns will be responsible for bringing their own computer/equipment

Qualifications Requirements
  • Excellent writing ability and communication skills
  • An interest in the politics and policies of center-right conservatives
  • Demonstrated interest in technology issues
  • Self-starting attitude
  • Strong quantitative skills are highly desired
