The Department of Communication Infrastructure at Florida Atlantic University is seeking a Telecommunications Specialist.

This position involves providing end-user support, installation, and configuration of modern communications technologies including Voice-over-IP (VoIP). As newer voice technologies such as VoIP are being utilized over data networks, this position will be responsible for basic network configuration and troubleshooting as it relates to data-network based voice communication technology.

Duties include, but are not limited to:
Install, test, maintain and repair all types of communication cable and terminations in accordance with the Office of Information Technology (OIT) standards at all FAU campuses and supported sites.

Install panels and associated hardware for voice and data terminations.

Telephone installation and configuration for both TDM and VoIP based systems.

Troubleshoot, repair, and test desk phones, soft-clients, and emergency phones in house.

This position is also responsible for acting as a project management liaison for Communication Infrastructure requirements for new construction or minor projects related to existing construction.

Minimum qualifications include:
A high school diploma/GED and two years of appropriate telecom and/or networking experience required. Appropriate college coursework or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience. Experience with digital PBX/VoIP phone switch software required, preferably Siemens Openscape Voice (OSV).

Valid Driver's license required.

Other requirements and skills requested include, but are not limited to:

Ability to carry out assigned duties as directed in a timely manner.

Ability to learn to resolve telephone troubles and restore service for all types of University phone sets, employing common tools and test equipment, i.e. volt meter, tone generator, hand-held set, break-out-tone box, oscilloscope and other such items.

Ability to provide basic networking functions including cable terminations, basic network switch configuration and port activations.

Ability to interact positively with end-users and vendors concerning procedures related to network and telephone installation and cabling.

Basic project management skills or training.
