HHMI's Janelia Farm Research Campus is a unique, world-class research community near Washington, D.C., is dedicated to understanding the function of neural circuits and developing synergistic imaging technology. Our highly collaborative structure is designed to support interdisciplinary work in small lab groups. An exciting opportunity exists for full-time temporary Research Technician to contribute to the Janelia Farm Media Fly facility.
This position performs a variety of highly skilled and precision functions in a dynamic and interactive environment in the Media group. Duties include, preparing and distributing fly media, preparing and distributing bacterial media and plates.

Organize and maintain the bacterial media preparation room including all equipment: Media preparation vessels, sterilization and pouring equipment, balance, etc.
Order and maintain stocks of chemical components, plates, and other supplies used in media preparation.
Prepare various sized batches and types of media from basic chemical components.
Sterilize and dispense finished media, label and distribute the media to laboratory personnel.
Prepare various sized batches of fly media, dispensing, labeling, stoppering and distribution of fly media. Weigh out media components for future use, prepare solutions used in fly media preparation.
Collect, record, organize and verify the accuracy of data. May use software applications to assemble, manipulate, format and/or perform statistical analyses of data.
Analyze data, formulate conclusions and create appropriate statistical presentations, including graphs and charts, and prepare and present written or oral progress reports regarding studies.
May demonstrate and explain various laboratory techniques to laboratory personnel and others.
Actively contribute to laboratory meetings and planning sessions.
Conduct literature reviews to assist in determining the most suitable methods to be used in research.
Perform the duties of a Research Technician I as required.
Education / Experience:
B.S. in Biology or appropriate field of science.
Skills and Abilities:
Experience with bacterial media and plate preparation.
Experience with weighing chemical components with a balance
Experience with sterilizing media with an autoclave.
Regularly works with computers and computerized instruments requiring data entry.
Attention to detail.
Good color vision
Ability to work independently with little direct supervision
Ability to interact with HHMI and non-HHMI personnel at all levels
Regularly lifts and/or carries objects weighing up to 20 pounds.
Regularly stoops and bends.
Regularly reaches and grasps with arms and hands.
Work involves possible exposure to malodorous vapors, contamination by toxic chemicals and acids and presence of carcinogenic substances.
Long periods of standing and/or sitting.
