Pope Transport - the leader in the Petroleum Transportation Industry is seeking a Terminal Manager for our Selma location. This location is staffed with very experienced and tenured Drivers and Administrative Staff. We are seeking someone with a wealth of knowledge in the Transportation Industry, preferably in Petroleum Transportation . JOB TITLE: TERMINAL MANAGER
JOB SUMMARY OR PURPOSE
The Terminal Manager is responsible for the safe, efficient and profitable operation of the terminal. This position has possible direct reports of Assistant Terminal Manager, Dispatcher and/or clerks as well as drivers. The position reports to either an area Operations Manager or to the Director of Operations.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Insure compliance with all applicable Federal and State regulations.
Insure compliance with all company safety policies and procedures.
Conduct monthly safety/communication meetings, documenting attendance and filing.
Conduct safety inspections at the terminal with the Director of Safety.
Assess with the Director of Safety any unsafe practices or sites, document findings and use to prevent future occurrences.
Assist the Director of Safety, when feasible, in accident or incident investigation.
Ride with drivers to assess safe performance of job.
Conduct delivery observations to assess safe delivery procedures.
Contact customers when appropriate to investigate service levels and discover expectations.
Explore and develop new customer opportunities and communicate progress with the Director of Marketing.
Seek to understand each customers needs based on customer type (keep full, call and demand etc.)
Train dispatchers and driver trainers where needed on customer service issues and document training.
Review monthly revenue reports.
Look for declines or increases in business with each customer is prepared to explain.
Review monthly P&L for terminal.
Utilize company PO system to purchase and review all invoices for terminal, approve, code and submit for payment to Mt. Olive.
Insure company’s interests are protected with vendors.
Review monthly reports with dispatchers.
Develop strategies with the Director of Operations regarding cost containment and efficiency improvements.
Review and suggest driver pay, incentive and benefit improvements.
Review the controllable budget with the dispatchers and assist in the development of the capital budget.
Assist in developing strategies to achieve revenue growth in the area of responsibility.
Continually assess vendor costs of maintenance, supplies and fuel. Seek low cost suppliers and negotiate lower rates wherever possible.
Insure preventive maintenance is completed on trailers at company-designated intervals.
Insure trailer maintenance files are kept current including PM reports, all safety related write-ups and inspection reports.
Inspect and verify that the DVCR is being completed and filed as per 396.11(c)(2) of the FMCSR.
Insure compliance with all company policies and procedures.
Review and suggest changes in any company manuals, (i.e. Dispatch, Driver Manual).
Review dispatch procedures and modify as needed.
Maximize maintenance dollars, utilizing warranty and adjustment credits for tires.
Assist Director of Marketing to insure business is profitable while being responsive to customer service.
Insure proper completion and timely submission of all reports to include: Accident/Incident Reports, Tractor Mileage Report, Trailer Hubometer Report, Trend Sheet, Miscellaneous Pay Sheet, Billing Exception Report and all other current and future reports.
Insure proper and timely completion of all driver paperwork, Drop Tickets, Driver Logs, Bills of Lading and all other driver required paperwork.
Insure Training requirements for new drivers is completed in accordance with company policy.
Insure proper completion of pre-employment procedures, to include drug testing, DOT file and personnel file.
Where no dispatcher is employed, the Terminal Manager is also responsible for the dispatch function, please refer to the Job Description for the Dispatcher.
Assist Dispatchers, clerical personnel and drivers in achieving their goals.
Direct training needs of the Dispatchers and clerical personnel as well as the drivers and enroll them in seminars as needed.
Develop strategies for driver retention.
Assess driver and dispatcher morale and develop tactics to improve.
Direct driver trainer and terminal staff meetings where appropriate.
Perform annual reviews of Dispatchers and drivers.
Utilizing company policies handle disciplinary problems with progressive discipline and document.
Represent the company and the trucking industry as a professional.
Handle and accurately complete all necessary paperwork related to the duties and responsibilities defined herein.
Perform all duties in accordance with company policies and procedures, and comply with all Federal, State and local regulations for the safe operations of a common carrier fleet hauling hazardous materials.
Maintain mobile communications ability either through company pager or mobile phone to be available in the event of an emergency.
Must possess a valid drivers’ license.
Must be able to read, write, speak and understand the English language sufficiently enough to perform the designated duties of a Terminal Manager. Must have the ability to perform simple mathematical calculations with mental ability to read maps, schedules, and road signs and maintain reports.
Must be able to effectively communicate both orally and in writing with company personnel and customers.
Must have a basic knowledge of the trucking industry to include the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations.
Must be able to operate computers, telephones, facsimile machines and other necessary office equipment.
Must have an understanding of human relations and methods of obtaining cooperation and support for company policies.
Must be able to sit and remain alert while driving long distances, answering phone calls, attending meetings, completing paperwork, etc.
Must be able to enter and exit tractor cabs for periodic driver audits. Cab floor level is generally from 36 to 66 inches above ground level, with entry and exit achieved with the assistance of various configurations of steps and handholds; also requires occasional bending, twisting, climbing, squatting, crouching and balancing.
Must be able to quickly respond in times of multiple priorities or situations requiring immediate and sound decisions.
The Terminal Manager may be subject to irregular work schedules, short notice for emergencies and other stressful and fatigue generating situations.
