Under the management of the Public Services Librarian, the Theological Reference Librarian supervises the Reference Department, also providing professional services in the areas of information literacy, collection development and library/educational support services as assigned.
Job Responsibilities:
Reference Services
  • Responsible for the delivery of traditional and electronic Reference Department services to all customers
  • Responsible for the continuing development and maintenance of all aspects of policy and procedures relating to reference service
  • Selects, trains, supervises, and evaluates Reference Desk staff
  • Provides bibliographic instruction (especially of a theological nature) and basic library orientation as requested.
  • Assists in the development of web-based library subject guides (especially of a theological nature)
  • Responsible for assessment of Reference Department services
Information Literacy
  • Assists the Public Services Librarian with the development, implementation and delivery of information literacy including the creation and development of web-based and print information literacy tutorials and tools for the Undergraduate School and Moody Theological Seminary(MTS)-Chicago as well as providing Branch Campus Library support as assigned
  • Assists the Public Services Librarian in the promotion of information literacy (especially of a theological nature) to all MBI faculty with special focus dedicated to assisting Moody Theological Seminary faculty with embedding literacy instruction into their course assignments
  • Responsible for teaching information literacy for the MTS-Chicago
  • Plans, organizes and initiates course or assignment-specific library instruction sessions, one-on-one consultations, general group and class orientations – including actual tours of library sources and services
  • Plans and implements specialized theological instruction, such as term-paper counseling/theses or subject-specific guidance
  • Assists the Public Services Librarian in the assessment of information literacy
Collection Development
  • Responsible for the selection of the print reference collection
  • Assists the Public Services Librarian with the selection of the reference e-resource collection
  • Develops and manages the theological collection of the Crowell Library as assigned
  • Assists in the development of collections that support the six degrees programs: Master of Divinity, Master of Arts in Biblical Studies, Master of Arts in Intercultural Studies, Master of Arts in Spiritual Formation and Discipleship, Master of Arts in Urban Studies, and Masters of Arts in Ministry Leadership
    • Receives and uses syllabi bibliographies as collection development tools
  • Develops and maintains relationships with MTS faculty and Dean
    • Communicates regularly with faculty to foster information (bibliographic and otherwise) sharing for the improvement of the collection
  • Revises theology portion of the Collection Development Policy and conspectus as necessary
Library/Educational Support Services
  • Serves as Library liaison as appointed to special Committees, Project Teams and Task Force endeavors in support of Library/educational service functions
  • Maintains professional activities, relationships, and skills for the advancement of MBI Library service as directly relating to the responsibilities of the Theological Reference Librarian position
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Job Qualifications:
  • Masters Degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited institution along with an accredited, advanced degree in theology (preferably M.Div.)
  • Three years experience worked recently in a seminary or academic library setting
  • Demonstrable record of excellence in reference, information literacy, collection development as well as web based technology and technology applications
  • Excellent interpersonal skills in serving with colleagues, subordinates and superiors with ability to be flexible and work comfortably in a large organizational structure
