Position Summary ODOT12-0540OC - Hermiston The purpose of the position is to function as a member of a Maintenance Crew and perform any required manual labor or equipment operation necessary to maintain, repair and/or reconstruct roadway/highway, freeway, bridges and/or rest area facilities. Employee will be required to use a vehicle to conduct business; you must possess and maintain a current, valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record. These jobs are performed outdoors, year round in all weather conditions, performing all types of manual labor work and/or operating a variety of heavy to light equipment and/or tools. Work in and around heavy construction equipment and around heavy traffic conditions. May be required to work at heights up to 30 feet. May be required work in excavations to depths of 15 feet. May be exposed to hazardous materials dumped at weigh stations, rest areas or transient camps under bridges. May be exposed to blood borne pathogens, hypodermic needles, cleaning solvents, acid drain openers, etc. Required to wear safety equipment to perform specific job tasks (i.e., fall protection, hard hats safety vests, steel-toed boots etc.). May be exposed to hazardous materials during accident cleanup. May be required to be available for emergency calls, 24 hours/day, 7 days/week, including holidays; or be On-Call and may be required to work rotating or nightshifts. May be required to travel overnight or for extended periods of time; May be required to respond to serious vehicle accidents, which may have resulted in injury or death. May be exposed to hazardous chemicals such as fumigants used to treat wooden members, various pesticides, paint removal chemicals, herbicides and various dyes used to check for cracks in steel members Pick up and dispose of litter and/or dead animals including birds/eggs. May work in wet, damp, hot and dusty conditions. May be required to walk on rough terrain or uneven slopes; stoop or bend around structures or equipment; or climb up/down ladders or equipment. May be required to perform frequent lifting & carrying up to 60 pounds of materials and equipment and, occasional-intermittent lifting & carrying over 60 pounds for special projects. Requires a maximum 60-minute response time for emergency call-outs This position is represented by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU/OPEU). Employee will be required to use a vehicle to conduct business; you must possess and maintain a current, valid driver's license and be able to obtain a commercial driver's license, CDLA, within 5 months of hire . Minimum Qualifications : You must have: Ø Two years of maintenance and/or construction experience in roadway/highway, bridge, sign, drawbridge or landscape, AND Experience in each of the following areas: · operating heavy and/or light motorized equipment; · using hand and power tools; · performing minor servicing of equipment, AND · applying safety procedures. Application Help: Position Duties Roadway Surface and Shoulder Maintenance: Perform minor surface repair including hand, pothole and concrete patching, and small inlay work. Operate heavy trucks, rollers, blades and motor graders to patch large sections of highway, remove slides, build/repair roadway shoulders and bike paths, and perform minor betterment construction. Perform manual work such as raking or shoveling asphalt on a paving crew. Sweep highway facilities such as shoulders, intersections, gore points, curbed sections, and structures using motorized sweeper or hand broom. Clean-up of sidewalks, graffiti, berm paving, bridge walks, islands, and gorepoints using mechanical and manual means. Weather-related Operations: Operate frame mounted tailgate and tag-along sanders, deicer trucks and spreaders to sand roadways. Operate rotary snow plows and truck mounted push plows to clear snow from roadway. Operate motor graders to cut “Snow Pack” from the roadway. Traffic Services Maintenance: Maintain, repair or replace metal guardrail, concrete barriers, fences, glare screens, roadway delineators or milepost markers. Set out temporary traffic control signs and devices and flag traffic to protect the traveling public and work crews. Control traffic and clean up the roadway in emergency situations involving accidents and spills which may include hazardous materials. Drainage Maintenance: Clean catch basins and related closed drainage systems using hand tools or power equipment. Dig and clean ditches using hand shovel or by operating motorized equipment including front end loaders, backhoes, graders, light and/or heavy trucks. Ditch cleaning includes removing silt and accumulated debris from culverts or inlets. Repair culverts, inlets and erosion. Roadside and Vegetation Management: Clean brush on right-of-way using chainsaws, motorized brush cutters and brush chippers. Mow grass in median areas and right-of-way using tractors or truck-mounted mowers. Spray roadside vegetation as required. Pick up and dispose of debris, dead animals and/or litter found on the roadway and adjacent right-of-way. Repair and rebuild fences. May perform rest area maintenance.
