Position Summary ODOT13-0180oc - Detroit The purpose of this position is to function as a member of a Roadway/Highway Maintenance Crew during the Winter Season and to perform any required manual labor or operate equipment necessary to maintain, repair, reconstruct any roadway or highway, freeway, bridge or rest area facility. This position works both in an office and outdoors, year round, in a variety of weather conditions. Employees may be required to work any hours/shift, any day of the week, including holidays, for emergency and weather-related purposes. Employees may be required to travel overnight. Note: This is a Winter Seasonal position that is expected to last approximately 5 months from date of hire. Seasonal positions are regular status, benefits eligible positions, which occur, terminate and recur periodically or regularly . This position is represented by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU/OPEU). Employee will be required to use a vehicle to conduct business; you must possess and maintain a current, valid commercial driver's license (CDLA) at the time of hire. Minimum Qualifications: Two years of maintenance and/or construction experience in roadway/highway, bridge, sign, drawbridge or landscape, AND Experience in each of the following areas: A) operating heavy and/or light motorized equipment; B) using hand and power tools; C) performing minor servicing of equipment,; AND D) applying safety procedures. You must have a current valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL A) You must have a maximum response time of 45 minutes to the Detroit Maintenance Yard for emergency call-outs. Applicants with experience operating a Snow Plow are preferred. Criminal Background and additional pre-employment check(s) as required for the position will be conducted on final candidates (could include Driver License, LEDS, and/or Education Verification). Respond to weather-related emergencies by assessing the need for and performing snow removal, de-icing or sanding to keep roadways, highways and bridges open for the traveling public. Operate light and heavy equipment, frame mounted tailgate and tag-along sanders, deicer trucks and spreaders to sand roadways. Operate rotary snowplows and truck mounted push plows to clear snow from the roadway. Operate motor graders to cut “Snow Pack” from the roadway. Roadway Surface and Shoulder Maintenance: Perform minor surface repair including hand, pothole and concrete patching, and small inlay work. Operate heavy trucks, rollers, blades and motor graders to patch large sections of highway, remove slides, build/repair roadway shoulders and bike paths, and perform minor betterment construction. Perform manual work such as raking or shoveling asphalt on a paving crew. Sweep highway facilities such as shoulders, intersections, gore points, curbed sections, and structures using motorized sweeper or hand broom. Clean-up of sidewalks, graffiti, berm paving, bridge walks, islands, and gorepoints using mechanical and manual means. Traffic Services Maintenance: Maintain, repair or replace metal guardrail, concrete barriers, fences, glare screens, roadway delineators or milepost markers. Set out temporary traffic control signs and devices and flag traffic to protect the traveling public and work crews. Control traffic and clean up the roadway in emergency situations involving accidents and spills which may include hazardous materials. Drainage Maintenance: Clean catch basins and related closed drainage systems using hand tools or power equipment. Dig and clean ditches using hand shovel or by operating motorized equipment including front end loaders, backhoes, graders, light and/or heavy trucks. Ditch cleaning includes removing silt and accumulated debris from culverts or inlets. Repair culverts, inlets and erosion. Roadside and Vegetation Management: Clean brush on right-of-way using chainsaws, motorized brush cutters and brush chippers. Mow grass in median areas and right-of-way using tractors or truck-mounted mowers. Spray roadside vegetation as required. Pick up and dispose of debris, dead animals and/or litter found on the roadway and adjacent right-of-way. Repair and rebuild fences. May perform rest area maintenance.
