Performs transportation of patients of all ages (newborn to geriatric) between nursing units, diagnostic areas, doctors' suites, and other areas of the hospital. Transports patients with wheelchair, stretcher or bed to designated area within the facility, according to information provided on written order (transport notice). Will also transport blood products or specimens. Major Duties: Meets organizational expectations as defined by the Employee Standards of Performance, hospital and department policies and procedures, and the hospital’s strategic goals.
Verbalizes a clear understanding of continuous quality improvement and customer satisfaction measures and actively participates in improvement initiatives. Completes patient transfer, body mechanics, transport procedures and equipment competencies. Demonstrates good body mechanics when assisting patients to/from bed and transport devices. Demonstrates an understanding of required protective personal equipment which may be necessary to transport a variety of patient conditions which may include but are not limited to communicable diseases, exposure to blood-borne pathogens, etc.
Demonstrates an understanding of the necessary cleaning/disinfecting of transport devices. Must possess the analytical skill to access care/treatment being given at the bedside and duplicate for transport. Demonstrates the ability to properly transport patient with accessory lines, such as IV pumps, urinary catheters, chest tubes, drainage catheters, oxygen and other devices without incident. Demonstrates the ability to make the correct mathematical calculations to assure a continuum of care from humidified room oxygen to cylindrical tank oxygen for transport.
Safely transports patients to and from department using appropriate on and off device; notifies charge nurse when a patient is being removed from and is returning to the unit, signs appropriate unit documents. Performs assistive functions that support the care of patients in the Medical Imaging department to assure safe, efficient and prompt delivery of test/treatment/care. Possesses computer skills/knowledge to perform the necessary functions to “track” patients within the Radiology Information System and/or EM Track System. Rotates as needed on all shifts as required to provide coverage needed to the Medical Imaging department.
Positively responds to changes in work schedules; demonstrates flexibility. Always checks patient arm band and verifies date of birth before transporting patient to department in accordance with JCAHO patient safety guidelines. Assists with transporting of specimens, supplies, records, patient charts, etc. Notifies supervisor of any incidents which may affect quality care or safety.
Demonstrates the ability to perform work in an accurate and timely manner. Handles self well in times of crisis. Coordinates multiple exams on same patient between areas of medical imaging in order to expedite patient care and minimize patient time in the department. Performs general office duties, answering phones, filing, maintaining patient records, etc.
Performs tasks that are supportive in nature to the essential functions of the job. Participates in staff meetings, educational programs, committees, QI activities and mandatory in-services. Demonstrates initiative in personal/professional development. Presents a professional image.
Assists with control of costs through the judicious use of human and material resources. Communicates effectively with team members, physicians, and other healthcare providers. Provides patients and family members with information as appropriate to this position. Utilizes established safety guidelines to correctly determine patient’s name, destination, mode of travel, time and other data.
Performs other duties as assigned or directed to ensure smooth operation of the organization. Education/Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Basic knowledge of hospital operations and medical terminology. CPR certification. Effective listener and communicator.
Interpersonal skills necessary to establish rapport with patients/patient families. Skill and proficiency to understand and follow instructions. Read, write and perform mathematical calculations. Individual who is considerate, compassionate, customer focused, responsible, accountable, dependable and possesses a proactive initiative.
High School Graduate or equivalent. One year in a healthcare setting preferred. Demonstrates Customer Service Excellence attitude. Licensure/Certification: CPR
