Volunteers of America of Greater Los Angeles is a large, national not-for-profit organization founded in 1896. We provide a variety of social services to Los Angeles area communities such as Head Start programs, Upward Bound college prep programs, veterans' services, homeless shelters, low-income housing program as well as drug and alcohol rehabilitation. Upward Bound is one of seven federally-funded TRIO programs. The Upward Bound program was established to provided fundamental support to participants in their preparation for college entrance. The program provides opportunities for participants to succeed in their pre-college performance and ultimately in their higher education pursuits. Upward Bound serves high school students from low-income familiies and high school students from families in which neither parent holds a bachelor's degree. The goal is to increase the rate at which participants complete the secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of post-secondary education.
The Tutor is responsible for providing academic assistance to assigned students in group or individual sessions. These sessions are designed to provide advise on ways students can approach or solve a coursework problem; to demonstrate to students study techniques and test preparation that may improve grades. The Tutor serves as a motivator and mentor.
Leads academic tutoring sessions to help students develop skills required to master academic course material.
Develops lesson plans.
Assists students in achieving a better understanding of a specific subject material and in improving academic capabilities.
Assists / supervises the completion and review of homework.
Meets with teachers to assist the student in passing the course, when needed.
Offers strategies to students on study skills, test taking and note-taking.
Provides academic coaching to students in tutorial sessions; advises and encourages students to perform their best in their courses.
Encourages students to read and do research to develop familiarity with the Internet
Encourages students' personal, social and academic development; encourages students to continue their education beyond high school.
Meets with assigned Upward Bound staff to provide updates on students' progress or to address concerns.
M ust be a rising junior, senior or graduate student currently enrolled in college and in good standing
Minimum of college sophmore classification (higher classification preferred)
Must be able to demonstrate a 2.07GPA or higher in subject area of competency (Algebra, Geometry, Math Analysis, Calculus, Statistics)
Minimum of 2 years of tutoring experience in subject competency
Training or work experience in academic tutoring, advising and/or peer couseling of high school students
Professional or personal experience in overcoming barriers similar to those confronting project participants
Ability to work with low-income, first generation high school students
Formal training and/or work experience in programming that improves secondary school retention/graduation rates
