The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is North America's largest transportation network, which moves approximately 2.4 billion New Yorkers a year on its subways, buses, railroads, bridges and tunnels. MTA Headquarters (MTAHQ) is a public benefit corporation chartered to provide general oversight, planning and administration to its seven operating agencies which are: MTA New York City Transit, MTA Long Island Rail Road, MTA Metro-North Railroad, MTA Bridges and Tunnels, MTA Capital Construction Company, and MTA Bus Company.
In conjunction with a massive rehabilitation program launched in the 1980's, MTA Arts for Transit was created to oversee the selection of artists and installation of permanent artworks in MTA subway and commuter rail stations. The program is intended to enhance the transit environment and promote the use of mass transit. Arts for Transit's diverse and beautiful collection of commissioned public artwork includes more than 215 site-specific artworks and 70 projects in progress. The program also encompasses Music Under New York (MUNY), the Poster Program, and the Lightbox Project, a series of photography exhibits. More information can be found at www.mta.info/art.

Responsibilities

The AFT Administrative Intern will learn about the public art process and further develop administrative and arts management skills. Responsibilities may include, but not be limited to, assisting staff with the following:

Inventory of the MTA Headquarters art collection
Evaluate, document and organize artwork installed (and in storage) throughout MTA Headquarters.
New permanent art projects
Call for, receive and process artist submissions. Prepare presentations and supporting materials needed for artist selection and orientation meetings. Attend artist selection and orientation meetings, provide assistance with notes and follow up correspondence.
Essential administrative support
Support daily office activity: monitor phone, mail, and email communications; respond to program inquiries; update press and artist lists; prepare for and staff special lectures, tours and special events.
Research to support the Permanent Art program and the Arts for Transit Collection

Qualifications

o Excellent research, data collection and report writing capabilities
o Strong interpersonal communications skills, both oral and written
o PC and Filemaker Pro proficiency
o Student must be work study or college credit eligible, min. of 15 hours per week is required

Education and Experience

o Majors in art history or arts administration preferred.
o Graduate studies, a plus
