MAJOR FUNCTION: Responsible for overseeing and coordinating the maintenance, repair and use of vehicles used to provide service for county eligible ambulatory clients.
ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES: Responsible for setting up maintenance, repair and cleaning schedules for vehicles. Ensures and verifies that automotive transportation service is available to appropriate program work sites. Monitors automotive equipment to ensure availability for daily use and makes any necessary arrangements to provide vehicles for use at each work site. Provides instructions and on-the-job training regarding general care and maintenance of vehicles, safety habits and requirements, and minor mechanical equipment repair(s). Resolves daily operational automotive equipment/mechanical problems advising Transportation Supervisor of significant problems or deficiencies. Coordinates transportation repair and maintenance requirements with Fleet Maintenance and other automotive repair shops to meet cost effective repair and maintenance budget allocations. Reviews and verifies forms, reports and information regarding mileage and billing cost and/or adjustment of billings for equipment repair and maintenance services.
Performs minor mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of gasoline driven automotive equipment. Uses hand garage shop tools. Performs emergency road service to equipment outside of garage. Inspects and ensures that vehicles interior/exterior is cleaned and that general vehicle is maintained as necessary. May change tires. May service equipment with gasoline, oil, grease and air. May drive vehicles as necessary. Duties include assisting with and/or delivery of supplies and equipment to various program sites.
Assist Transportation Supervisor in evaluating daily transportation route schedules to ensure maximum vehicle use versus operational cost. Assists with evaluating automotive equipment making recommendations to improve cost effective and efficient daily operations. Completes and maintains work forms, records and reports. Perform related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Knowledge and skill in the operation and minor maintenance of van and related automotive equipment. Knowledgeable of Polk County's geographical areas and roadway/highway system. Knowledge of state highway driving requirements. Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and standard practices of the automotive mechanic's trade. Knowledge of the principles and operation of gasoline and internal combustion engines. Knowledge of automotive electrical systems. Ability to diagnose trouble in automotive equipment. Ability to read and understand parts lists and repair manuals. Ability to keep records and reports. Ability to learn defensive driving and safety standards, procedures and methods. Ability and agility to perform various tasks in all weather conditions. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with employees, officials and the public.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduate of an accredited high school or possess an acceptable equivalency diploma and have a minimum of four (4) years experience in the maintenance and repair of automotive equipment.
Must possess a valid driver's license and be able to secure a valid Florida Class A CDL license with passenger endorsement at the time of employment within this classification as required by State of Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles by state statute/Florida Senate Bill 658. A comparable amount of related training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to provide own normal hand tools of the mechanical trade.
The Transit Services Division is responsible for assisting in the Emergency Management Operations for Polk County in the event of an emergency. When circumstances warrant, such as a time of impending or declared disaster (i.e. hurricanes, tornados, flooding, etc.), the person filling this position will be expected to be available to participate in the Polk County Emergency Management Plan. This responsibility includes, but is not limited to, providing staffing coverage at various locations throughout Polk County, food and water distribution and/or any other duties which are deemed critical to assure the citizens of our County are provided with the necessary services during and after a disaster. The Emergency Management duties may require the employee to be away from their home and family for several consecutive days. Must have a home telephone at the time of employment and maintain during employment as employee is subject to call out.

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 8AM-5PM-Weekends If Needed
Rate of Pay: $13.22 per hour
