Handshake is looking for an experienced engineer to lead, manage, and grow our already strong engineering team.

Until now, the CEO has been the engineering backbone of the company, but if he's going to focus on collecting ivory backscratchers (very important), strong technical leadership needs to be brought in to take over the engineering team.

Handshake is an extremely product-centric company, and if we have a single core competency, it's engineering. The perfect candidate will be in their element both slinging code and running our small but hardcore engineering team.

This is a role for someone who wants to lead a team but still loves getting their hands dirty.

The Challenge

From a technical perspective, Handshake is no walk in the park:

It involves sending huge amounts of data down to resource constrained mobile devices and coming up with highly optimized ways of interrogating and displaying that data.

It involves merging data across multiple devices per account that are only intermittently online, i.e. Handshake is a fault-tolerant distributed system with partially connected components.

It has to mask this massive technical complexity behind a simple, beautiful UX that non-technical users love.

Your Key Responsibilities

Oversee development of our entire stack: frontend, backend, and mobile.

Liase with the executive team on product vision and translate requirements into implementation.

Manage the engineering team, including coordinating code review, sprint planning, and so on.

Nurture new hires, develop existing talent. In short, bring the best out of everyone on the team.

Write amazing code and be the example that junior engineers aspire to.

Things About You

BS or MS in Computer Science or similar field.

8+ years software development experience.

Has managed a team of at least three engineers.

Advanced Python skills; experience in Django or other Python-powered web frameworks preferred.

Experience with a C dialect; Objective-C and iOS dev experience preferred, but C / C++ also fine.

Really, really passionate about good, clean code.

Love start-ups, the tech community and are committed to growing something BIG.

Benefits Of Working At The 'Shake

Comprehensive medical / dental benefits.

Whatever computer you want, as long as it has a little glowing Apple on it.

Competitive salary / equity packages.

Working with humble, face-meltingly awesome people.

Sweet office in Lower East Side, surrounded by great food and other treats of the city.

A Scrabble mug with the first letter of your name on it. No other company can possibly offer this.

One of our employees recently said:
I started working at Handshake so I could move to New York, and now I live in New York so that I can work at Handshake.

Sniff. You had us at hello!

About Handshake

Handshake is a venture-backed, rapidly-growing startup changing the way brands sell to retailers. Think of every product that ends up on a shelf in a retail store; moving those products from the brands to the stores is the space we're transforming. It’s kind of a big deal.

If you like the idea of building and shipping something that people are crying out for, changes the way they do their jobs, and is growing faster than the number of people riding the L train each morning, we'd love to hear from you.
