The VP, K-12 Policy and Practice will develop and execute strategies to ensure that the Ed Trust’s K-12 efforts effectively focus national attention on inequities in public education and the actions necessary to close gaps in both opportunity and achievement. To that end, this person will ensure tight coordination between and among the division’s research, practice and policy-development departments, as well as close collaboration with operating units in other divisions.

Based in Washington, DC, the Vice President for K-12 Policy and Practice will report to Kati Haycock, President, will serve as a member of the Ed Trust’s executive team, and will lead a team of eleven professionals.

Division Structure

The Division of K-12 Policy and Practice consists of four departments – K-12 Policy Development, K-12 Practice, Teacher Quality and Research.

Key Responsibilities
  • Executive Management
  • Lead the K-12 Policy and Practice division, prioritizing key initiatives and providing feedback and mentorship to team members across the division’s four departments;
  • Serve as a member of the organization’s Executive Team, working with other division leaders to craft the organization’s broad strategic direction and operational plans;
  • Advise the organization’s Executive Team on critical K-12 issues, driving the policy agenda and leveraging the organization’s resources to advance that agenda;
  • Advocate internally for the work of the K-12 team, garnering the internal resources and support necessary to move K-12 Policy and Practice efforts forward in a timely and efficient manner.
Thought Leadership
  • Serve as a content expert on K-12 issues, ensuring that the Ed Trust is a pre-eminent voice in national discussion of education issues
  • Provide strategic direction for the organization’s research and practice work so that it both informs and serves as a powerful extension of the Ed Trust’s policy efforts
  • Ensure K-12 policy positions and K-12 practice efforts are appropriately linked and work in partnership.
External Relations
  • Raise the profile of the organization’s efforts, finding ways to extend its impact by attracting the attention and respect of the broad community of stakeholders invested in K-12 education
  • Develop and leverage third-party working partnerships, enlisting current and prospective partners in the work of the Ed Trust
    Manage existing and new donors, cultivating the support of the funding community and providing regular updates and briefings, where appropriate;
  • Represent the Ed Trust by speaking publicly to large audiences of educators and, occasionally, non-educators at external meetings and conferences, thus elevating the profile of the organization’s policy and practice work;
  • Foster effective working relationships with national, state, and local organizations that can help advance the Ed Trust’s mission.

  • Keen analytical skill with the ability to synthesize and coordinate complex concepts;
  • Capacity to write and speak clearly and persuasively to a wide range of audiences, including parents, practitioners, and state and federal policymakers;
  • Professional maturity, with the ability to handle a dynamic and changing agenda, adapting to a changing landscape, where appropriate, and operating effectively amid ambiguity;
  • Exceptional relationship building skills, with the capacity to work effectively with diverse stakeholders, cultivating impactful partnerships and alliances;
  • Extensive knowledge of in K-12 education, at the federal, state, and local levels;
  • Experience in K-12 education reform-related programs and practices is desirable.
