This position is included in the NCDOT Competency Based Pay (CBP) Program designed to encourage and reward for acquiring and performing critical skills identified by management. This program works within a broad salary range and is skilled mechanic work. Tasks involve the service, repair, rebuild and diagnosis of a diverse number of mechanical systems for a large variety of gas/diesel powered automotive/heavy equipment. Employees may perform mechanic work at various levels. Work assignments vary in complexity depending on the type of mechanical system. Must possess a valid Class A CDL with “N” endorsement within 90 days of employment. Pre-employment drug testing is required. As a condition of employment, release form (ALCDRG-01) and background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be signed allowing NC DOT to check with previous employers for the past two (2) years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Employees must wear safety toe shoes. Employee is required to furnish a complete set of tools.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies:

Preference may be given to applicants possessing skilled mechanic experience with preventive maintenance, A/C, axles, brakes, suspension, tires, clutches, transmissions, cranking systems, lighting systems, cooling systems, fuel systems, and hydraulic systems. Knowledge may range from a working knowledge of the methods of servicing, repairing, rebuilding and diagnosing depending on the type of mechanic system. Skill in the use of tools and equipment used in the equipment shop. Ability to determine the causes of improperly operating automotive and heavy equipment and the methods to be used in the repair. Ability to read and comprehend shop and repair manuals. Physical strength and dexterity sufficient to move relatively heavy objects. This position will function as a journey level mechanic.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Optional guidelines: experience in the field of work related to the position's role may be substituted on a year-for-year basis. . . .
